Remortgage and issue with my name

I will not go into the utter saga I have had to endure these last 6 months but the upshot is the name on the deeds is not the same as the remortgage. The mortgage advisor who helped us has compensated us for his utter incompetence.

Basically, on the deeds, my name is Sally Ann (not real name). I've used that name in multiple situations. The initial first time mortgage went through fine with this.

I didnt realise but am also known as Sally-Ann and Sally-Ann Mae. On my birth certificate, it is Sally-Ann Mae, on my passport it is Sally-Ann, on my drivers licence and marriage cert it is Sally Ann.

I genuinely don't know how no one (as well as myself) noticed they were different and I assumed that Mae was not important because it is just a middle name. My passport was created from my birth certificate!!! Tbh I hate the middle name because it is my aunts name and we do not speak anymore.

I didn't realise the hyphen would cause such an issue either.

Anyway, the new mortgage was sorted by the mortgage advisor and has gone through as Sally-Ann Mae. I didn't question this because this is my name. The solicitor said I needed to change it because of the hyphen. I gave them my passport and they said this was fine and I didn't need to do anything else. My mortgage completed at the end of July.

They have now come back to me to say the passport does not include Mae, therefore this is not accepted. I need to give them ID with Mae in it.

I really really do not know what to do. I have my birth certificate, but I am now married. My marriage certificate doesn't have Mae in it.

Are they being super pedantic about my middle name? Should they have sorted this before the completion of the mortgage?

Can they accept a bank statement as proof of my name (because that does include Mae in the name).

If I cannot give them ID, what happens? Are they in trouble for letting this happen?

Any help at all with this would be very appreciated. Im so stressed about this!

I hate my name!!!!!

I would hope that it will suffice to provide them with documents that link your names - so, birth certificate and marriage certificate. The bank statement can't hurt as additional evidence. Good luck and hope it's sorted smoothly, sounds like you've had some big headaches.

Can you change your name by deed poll so that it is just Sally Ann then send them a copy of the deed poll? As your major forms of id are already in that format it shouldn't cause too much work. Just google free deed poll to find the correct words, get two people to witness it, I would actually get multiple copies all signed at the same time. Then just keep a copy with your birth certificate.

What did you give to the mortgage adviser for proof of ID?

Funnily enough I have a very similar hyphen issue! Give them all the docs, passport birth certificate & marriage certificate and it’ll be fine.

Mehmeh22 · 24/09/2023 20:21

So even though my birth certificate is Sally-Ann Mae, my marriage cert is Sally Ann, and my passport is Sally-Ann, they should accep this?

They should do - give them a document with all the names you use. You should consider trying to standardise them though.

Mehmeh22 · 24/09/2023 20:30

Believe me, after this experience, I will definitely standardise them!!!!!!

This is legal matters, so the mortgage has already completed several months ago, and only now they have complained about your name?
What is the consequence of just ignoring them and carrying on repaying as per the schedule.
They are presumably concerned because it affects their security on the loan, but they should have sorted it when they had a chance.
I'd be surprised if there were any consequences for you, it seems like the consequences are actually for them instead.
Confirm with them exactly what will happen if you do not provide the ID, and decide what to do based on that.
