Mortgage advice, do I have to go back to work?

Hi all! We’re in a bit of a dilemma! So we’ve managed to buy a house while I’ve been on mat leave. It’s a new build due to be ready between December and Feb. My mat leave ends in December and I’m due to go back at the start of January. But we’ve been doing the numbers and (FYI we have a 3 yo and a 6 month old) it’s just not going to be worth it financially, especially while both will have to be in nursery before the eldest starts school. I would be using basically all my earnings on childcare and I’d rather be the one looking after them if that’s the case! But our mortgage offer is based on my income also and I got a return to work letter and everything. Now we would be fine paying the repayments on DHs salary, we wouldn’t struggle, but would the mortgage offer get taken back if I don’t go back to work? WWYD? My baby also won’t take a bottle of any kind and is ebf so I’m also worried about that side of nursery too. Just not sure how to work it for the best! TIA for any knowledge and advice 🙏🏼

We moved while I was on mat leave. Got a letter from my employer confirming I planned going back full time and earnings etc. we moved in the January and I went back to work in the April… part time 😬 then reduced my hours even more not long after. That was 10 years ago. Still with the same company.

Hi! So we’ve been in our house just over a year now and I extended my mat leave to the full 52 weeks unpaid, used up my holiday and then left! I let work know I wasn’t going to come back and they were fab about it and understood. But by the time I was technically unemployed we had been in the house a couple of months and it all went through fine. I now set my own hours teaching yoga and pilates classes and make almost the same as I did doing 30 hours at work! So no struggling to pay the mortgage etc and I have been able to spend more time with my kids and less money on childcare

Sounds brilliant. If you don't already you should teach mum and toddler yoga or Pilates. There are so many for babies but then nowhere for sahm /part time mums with toddlers

Definitely look into this. There's nothing like this anywhere near me and I'd love it!

I do this too! I’m pre and post natal qualified so run post natal classes where you can bring your kids from babies to preschoolers and some mums bring their school age kids too during the holidays and they get their own mat and can join in 😊 they’re some of my favourite classes!
