Threatened by a neighbour - Address issues

I wasn't sure where to post this but hoping someone might know a way to help, please move if not in right topic! It's a bit of a long story I'm afraid.

I've had some mail delivered to the wrong address because of presumed computer error with the address.

I live in an address "off" a street, so for example I live at 1 Kingston Villas OFF Water Lane, and 1 Water Lane is a completely different home and has a different postcode.

When I order online, I usually have to amend the address as it nearly always automatically gives 1 Water Lane with my postcode. However something I've just ordered with the correct address typed in has had a printed address label with 1 Water Lane. I've called the company today and they've confirmed I had put my address in correctly and it was a printing error at their end.

The person who lives at 1 Water Lane has just come over with my mail, told me that anything further going to her address she would destroy and eventually threatened to hit me. My mail was also opened and has been on previous occasions also. She didn't even give me chance to apologise before kicking off.

But my question is, is there anyway that this can be prevented in future, other than redirecting my post to another address and hoping for the best if any post does come to me? Most of the time I'll do click and collect anyway, but its not always possible or convenient.

Your neighbour sounds very unpleasant and aggressive. My DD had this trouble when she moved to 23 XXX Terrace Postcode and her mail was being delivered to 23 XXX Street Postcode. 23 XXX Terrace was off XXX Street. I think she contacted Royal Mail. I know it was easily sorted out, but the people at 23 XXX Street weren't horrible about it, like your neighbour.

So your house and this other house have different postcodes, but their house usually comes up when your postcode is entered? If that’s what happens then I think you need to get on to Royal Mail to ensure their database is correct as that’s what most delivery companies use.

If you use the Royal Mail postcode search with your postcode, what comes up?

SecondStarOnTheRight · 22/09/2023 14:05

On royal mail it comes up with my address, listed as 1 Kingston Villas, Water Lane, my village/postcode, which is all correct.

Admittedly it's happened before, but this is only the third time I'm aware of in three years? Once was an error from the postman, it had my address correct, he took it to the wrong house. And I've had theirs too, I even had a workman once who took a good 20 minutes to accept he was at the wrong address.

I'll try to speak to royal mail to see if anything can be done. The nearest address I could trust for redirection is 15 miles away so not very convenient and obviously can't redirect everything unless I pay repeatedly for the rest of the time I live here.

Could you arrange to pick up mail from the local sorting office or post office?

Not re: your mail issue, but in your shoes, I would consider reporting the threat of assault to the police.

This could be possible but I worry that if my address is put down wrong again it won't get delivered to the post office. Which is why the best option I can think of is just using my parents address, it's a less complicated address and the neighbours are much nicer! The sorting office is further than them, so that would be more inconvenient, but the post office is only a short walk.

I'm considering it, but I did argue back, and admittedly did swear as I closed the door so I'm a little bit worried it could fall back on me that my actions caused her to react like that.

I've spoken to the council as it was them who sent the mail today, and they said I can report to them for antisocial behaviour if I wanted to.

The other thing I'd worry about is if anything escalated from it. They threatened the police on me before just for parking in front of their property, even though there was and still isn't any parking restrictions and isn't a private road!
