Neighbours cameras on his home

We have a strange neighbour who seems to have made his home into a fortress and put lights and cameras up high on the front of his property. The house is practically on the path (front garden is about 3ft) - he has a normal Ring doorbell but also another motion sensored camera up high pointed downwards into the street. Is he allowed to film people without their knowledge? Should he be displaying a notice to advise that he has this camera?

If he should have a sign, which authority would I get in touch with to ensure this is done?

He should have a sign saying cctv is on the property but this doesn’t have a specific size etc. no one really enforces it. He can record his property and also the pavement leaving to his home but can’t record other people property, I’m in a terrace and record my front garden and steps along with the pavement outside my home as that’s where I park my car but I ensure I’m not recording my neighbours comings and goings. You can ask him to see proof of his view from the camera if you wish but he doesn’t have to tell you and unless he’s likely to be recording your property then it’s tough really.

Thank you. I wasn't sure and somebody else mentioned it to me.

I'm just here for the back story

There must be a reason you're so bothered that he isn't capturing you / why he's secured his home

Not sure why this bothers people so much, you'd be the first to run to him for evidence if your house got robbed.

Actually I wouldn't! He's a complete self righteous knob of a neighbour. One of our other neighbours said about it the other day so I was just asking out of interest.

We've recently renovated and my techy DH has put cameras up around the house. I don't recall there being any legal blurb when he bought the cameras though. 🤔 We do have a CCTV sign in the window though.

We can only search back I think 5 days if needed, which came in handy when teens smashed the front window with a rock and tried to kick the front door in! I certainly don't sit there watching the cameras, but until we get a ring door bell, proper fencing etc- its handy to see if its workmen here or MIL!

I had the exact same issue with a neighbour.

I contacted the ICO - they dont have the powers to enforce anything related to domestic CCTV use.

The police can only get involved if the CCTV is capturing images from bedrooms.

However you can make a Subject Access Request to this neighbour as if the CCTV captures images beyond his boundary.
