Aunt took everything

Need advice on this
My grandparents had 2 children our father & our aunt
Our father died some years ago us his 3 children always visited / helped our grandparents, one day she said our aunt had took a considerable amount of money from her account ( she had control over bank cards etc)ment for the grandchildren at Christmas and wouldn't give it her back she was upset and wanted us to ask her where the money had gone. We asked her she came up with lots of diffrent explanations then her & her bullying husband & sons went to my grandparents god knows what was said but my grandmother took it back saying she didn't say anything and we had caused trouble ( she had previously shown us her bank statements of the money going out never going back in) so as a result we don't speak to the aunts side of family.
Now our grandfather has passed away a year ago they never told us they were clearing the house was all done very quickly we never even got offerd an old photo nothing..now we know there were things in grandads will he wanted the grandsons to have we think all this was in his will? Nobody got anything the aunts side had everything
These items are not worth much we don't care about that it's the sentiment behind them. If we approach a solicitor could they look into if these items were in the will ment for his grandsons and what's happened to them?

Who was the executor of the will and have you seen a copy? Probate search should show one but there may be a time lag. If you felt they were bring financially abused you could report it to adult social care or police if either is still alive.

Thank you for reply, we tried at the time to bring police in but our grandmother wouldn't hear of it I think she was too scared plus the aunts excuse was nan had dementia ( she hasn't, ) the aunt git her to sign over power of attorney to her some time back, we have no idea what was in his will who dealt with it or anything
She won't answer any questions if we ask she just accuses us of being gold diggers lol which is abit rich after all she'd done

You need to see a copy of the will.

Has it gone through probate yet? When was this. It can take 6-12 months to finalise probate.

Jcb1975 · 04/09/2023 22:46

It's been over 18months so I'm presume it has ,nothing is shown on GOV probate search tho, I think it will have to come down to getting a solicitor

Probate has taken almost two years for my uncle, so it may not be complete just yet.

I'd report this as abuse of a vulnerable adult to your local social services. This is really concerning behaviour and it sounds like she's afraid of them. It's very important this is reported so there's a record of it. I'd go and see a solicitor and see what they advise. Can you talk to her again and say what you've noticed and that you're worried and would like to help make sure her wishes are followed.

We are going to have to report it now, she had stopped all nan's visitors unless on her say so. The care home say they have to follow her wishes as she had power of attorney

That really is awful... why do people do such things to old folk...

Why aren't the care home flagging that as isolation control and abuse? I'd be querying why they aren't following their safeguarding processes for vulnerable adults.
