Insurance Question

Looking for advice. If another driver has crashed into your car. They accept the blame. Are you better going through your own insurance or their insurance company?
pros and cons?

You aren’t a party to the other driver’s insurance contract. You should approach your own insurer who will deal with the other driver’s insurer on your behalf to recover the damage.

If you don’t inform your own insurer of an accident, even when it wasn’t your fault, you risk invalidating your policy.

…assuming you have comprehensive insurance and not just 3rd party cover. If the latter you will have no option but to approach the other driver’s insurer, but you’ll still need to notify your own insurer.

Your insurance. The other side are motivated to minimise payout and have no contract with you. YOUR insurers also don't want to pay out much but you have a contract with them so have that leverage!
Ask me how I know :/

When it happened to us, we went through the third party insurance, no problems, they provided a hire car for a month and paid out a very generous settlement for the write off. We just informed our own insurance company as required and they were happy just to note it on file.

Thank you.
My own insurer is already involved.
reported within an hour of the accident.
Just wondered what the other side of insurance was

Yes. They are informed. Yet I still need to pay excess?
and then they will ‘try ‘ to claim back 🤷‍♀️

Unfortunately yes. They pay then claim the costs back from the other insurer. Usually this would just be a matter of time, but you never know what might come out of a claim process…

afromom · 22/08/2023 18:53

Until the 2 companies agree that it wasn't your fault, you have to pay the excess. Once both sides have agreed you can then claim the excess back from the third party insurer.

Beware it takes forever to sort out!
