My grandsons dad has just died - suddenly. Late twenties. Not on DGS birth certificate but DNA tested with dad's parents. Dad recently released from prison. Dad pursued relationship with DGS. Dad's criminality has amassed him rather alot of money (so my daughter speculates - she was never with him DGSproduct of one night stand)
I'm assuming dad has died intestate but that his money probably isn't in bank accounts (or at least ones that can be found easily)
DGS is dad's only child. Does anyone know how this might play out.

Depends if there is a will, depends what country you live in. If he was in prison was his money not subject to the proceeds of crime act? Hard to tell from the details so far

Would you want your grandson to have proceeds of crime though?

If he hasn’t left a will would it be next of kin? Parents? I’m sure someone will come along soon to advise.

In the UK if there's no will the law on intestacy will apply. As far as I know it's the same in all parts of the UK. Child would be next of kin if deceased died unmarried. In these rather unusual circumstances I wonder how easy it will be to get hold of the money. The police, HMRC and confederates may all be taking an interest.

I'm sorry I do sound rather mercenary and money grabbing! I'm not usualiy but in this particular situation I feel quite strongly for lots of different reasons but mainly because I had just pinned dad down to helping me fund a very costly sport that DGS has become very good at (national level) and is costing me hundreds every month. Don't know how DGS can carry on without the money that was going to come from dad!

I would engage a solicitor to ensure that your grandson is recognised as next of kin - it could be worthwhile in this case. His dad’s relatives are unlikely to play by the rules of intestacy.
