How can I obtain a copy of a will?

My Dm died 25yrs ago and her will left everything to my step father who has recently died. Is there any way I can obtain a copy of his will as there are some of my Dm's belongings that I am wondering what has happened to.

You can search the probate records for free online and then order the file for £1.50 which will include the will if there was one.

That will only work if there’s been a grant of probate already, so it depends how recently he died and who is dealing with his estate. Do you know who his executors are?

Search probate records for documents and wills (England and Wales)

Assume you're in England/Wales. Once probate is granted a will is a public document and you can get copies:

@elizzza thank you for your reply. I'm not sure who the executors are, when he and my DM made their wills they had twin wills and myself and my step fathers son were executors of both wills, the son has now died so I assume my step father has made another will naming his daughter as sole executor.

Thank you and @Bromptotoo for your advice.

It's saying nothing found, I assume probate hasn't been granted yet, does anyone know how long this takes.

It's just taken me over five months to get probate for DH and I've heard of it taking 18 months for some people.

@PuppyMcPupFace Goodness, I never knew it took so long.

I'm so sorry for your loss.

@frustratednomad the will only becomes public when probate is granted. That can take a long time and it is highly likely a lot of low/no value items may have been disposed of.

Try to contact the daughter or a relative and see if they can help.
