Diamond fell out of ring

The diamond fell out of my 4 week old engagement ring tonight and it's lost. Any advice would be great - I'm really devastated.

Bought the ring for £950 a month ago from an independent jeweller who mostly sells online, but she does sell some of her stuff in a proper shop. Have all the receipts etc safe.

Out tonight and noticed suddenly that the diamond is gone. Clasps still in tact so it must have rotated slightly then slipped out. Diamond is ab unusual shape.

Retraced steps for an hour but couldn't find it unsurprisingly.

Any advice on where I stand? Presumably ih wasn't of merchandisable quality. Do I need to report it as lost to the police for insurance claim? Does she have to just refund/replace?

So upset. Thanks in advance for any advice.

I’d go through your insurance. I had my engagement ring valued and then insured straight after I received it, for such circumstances. I would also contact the jeweller that made it. The stone really shouldn’t be falling out after a month. That’s shoddy.

Did you use a credit card to buy it? For example, My Amex card would cover this loss I think.

IdSell · 23/07/2023 23:29

Do you have any photos of it? The stone shouldn't fall out like that? I wonder if any photos might give a clue to why it fell out?

Houseplantmad · 23/07/2023 23:30

How did you pay? If by credit card then that should offer protection if there are any difficulties with the retailer.

TizerorFizz · 23/07/2023 23:57

Insurance? However not all policies include jewellery lost out of the house unless specified. I lost a necklace (still don’t know how it came off!) and my insurance did pay. Yours sounds like a faulty mount.

The stone obviously wasn’t secure so the ring was not fit for purpose. The store has responsibility here.

toomuchlaundry · 24/07/2023 00:03

When did you last see it? A couple of friends have lost diamonds from a ring and found it in a hand or bath towel, so is it possible you lost it before you went out.

Obviously, the clasp should not be so loose after such a short period of time

Thank you all for the replies. I spoke to the jeweller this morning and she's been great. Really apologetic and she's going to replace it with a thicker diamond.

The one that broke was a pear cut with 4 long claws holding it in place, but the stone was quite thin. She thinks maybe the stone actually cracked and that it must have broken and slipped out.

I feel much better.

If anyone finds a thin, probably cracked salt and pepper diamond around Covent Garden/Soho/China Town then I will pay a reward and love you always. It's the sentimentality of it...but I know I'm never getting it back!

That's a great update. 💍

Now that's what you call good customer service!
I am glad you managed to get it resolved

I would recommend you take some very clear photos with something ( like a penny ) next to it for size ref just incase it happens again or you loose the whole thing.

A few years ago a friend took several pieces of jewellery to a professional photographer studio and had it all clearly photoed with a date stamp on the photo .
It proved very worth while when she was burgled and they tried to sell her necklace at a porn shop.

TizerorFizz · 24/07/2023 13:16

Remember the 4cs. Cut, clarity, carat and colour. Clearly yours wasn’t the greatest cut if it was too thin. Does that mean depth or width? Often a pear will be held in by a secure piece of gold at the pointed end. Not 4 claws equally spaced.

This. It fell out after 4 weeks which is unacceptable. The ring was faulty.

This is how Tiffany mount their pear shapes. Note large “claw” at the pinged end.

warblingwater · 25/07/2023 03:16

My pear has just three prongs but I had the one at the tip made thicker as I found it would be every so slightly loose every now and then.
I check it always by giving it a small shake near my ear and could always hear a tiny rattle. Now I've had the third prong made thicker it never rattles.

TizerorFizz · 25/07/2023 08:53

No stone should ever rattle in its setting. The Tiffany example is how a pear should be set. The bigger the stone, the more important it is to anchor the pointed end.

warblingwater · 25/07/2023 19:42

Personally I'm not a fan of the Tiffany setting, four prongs looks too many imo. Agree that the point should have a strong anchor, now my ring has that it is much more secure and never rattles. In their defence, they did tell me my ring was more for occasional wear but I insisted on it being my every day engagement ring Grin so I def needed reinforcements lol
