Hi, I’m a social worker and went on a home
visit a week ago to assess a client. Upon leaving the property i scraped my car against the wall, I misjudged the distance and left a big scratch on one side. I was annoyed with myself as I was in DH’s car (mine was in for it’s MOT) but got out and checked the car, I can’t recall seeing any damage to the wall but can’t say I checked thoroughly as it was a scratch (but a very big one)

Fast forward a week and the client has called in to say that their neighbour has been around to his property and stated the wall (which the neighbour owns) is damaged and crumbling down. They say they have witnesses to say I hit the wall (which I do not dispute AT ALL, it’s evident on the car that I scraped against it) however as far as I’m concerned I recall no damage to their wall and it’s been a whole week, how can they say for sure nothing has happened in the last week to cause further damage? Why wait a week then ring up?

I have contacted my insurance who have said I’m covered but will lose my no claims. Im
not sure whether I should go and talk to the neighbours but don’t want to open myself up to any professional complaints etc as I’m newly qualified. I have spoken to my union who have said to claim the 30 minutes free legal advice they offer so I will do that tomorrow.

i am absolutely mortified this has happened and obviously don’t want to have anyone out of pocket but at the same time what are my next steps, can I get someone to go and look at it and price it up (a bricklayer maybe??). Or do I just go through the insurance and suck it up. I’m so so embarrassed and can’t stop crying.

Walls are usually a lot more robust than that. Do you know someone who could 'go for a walk' past their house, and have a quick look at the wall while they are passing? Someone else (including the neighbour it belongs to) might have bashed into it and knocked it over, and they are trying to get you to take the rap for it.

They live down a private road that has only 3 houses at the end so can’t really go and have a look ☹️

How annoying for you. Just a thought are you insured to do business visits in your husband's car. My husband's insurance wouldn't cover me to do house calls in his car as I was a different profession to him.

Yes you can and should. Take photos of the wall.

Yeah I’m fully covered on my DH’s car thank god, it costs a fortune but worth it!

My DH has just been up to have a look, he just went down the road and took a photo, there’s bricks on the floor in a pile (about 5/6) but there weren’t any bricks on the floor last week (from what I recall, the wall was all intact) but I my argument is anyone could have gone into that wall since then.
