Royal Caribbean changing cruise price after paying

Mum1976Mum · 04/05/2023 09:26

So, we have just about scraped the money together for a holiday in July. Lots of holidays out of our price range but managed to book a 7 day cruise around Norway for 2.7k - 2 adults, 2 kids. Booked it yesterday morning, paid in full, all good. I booked the hotel, parking, pet sitter etc. yesterday afternoon all non refundable. Got an email at 9pm last night to say price was wrong on website, price would not be honoured and offering me $100 in onboard credit (which we don’t need).

So this morning they still haven’t got in touch to tell me how much more I will have to pay if I don’t cancel. I phone up, it’s £1500 extra!!! I’ve now been on hold to speak to a supervisor for an hour but they say they won’t be able to do anything.

What on earth do we do? If we cancel we are £500 out of pocket. Any advice welcome. I’m so sad.

@Bamboozleme and do you think that justifies not actually being able to confirm the price increase within the cancellation window, and the fact they know there is an error but they are still continuing to sell it?

UNSOLD holiday prices can change. UNSOLD.

do you really think you’re being helpful at this point?

Screenshot clearly says Once the price of your chosen holiday has been confirmed at the time of booking, then subject to the correction of errors, we will only increase or decrease the price in certain circumstances.

it specifically mentions correcting errors.

So they can claim that anything is an error and rip off their customers as they please?

They may be acting legally, but what they're doing will cost them in the longer term. From my experience, people rarely go on just one cruise - many cruise again and again. Customer loyalty is important.

Wouldn't mind betting they'll go out of business before long if this is how they treat their paying customers. Other cruise liners are available!

adriftabroad · 04/05/2023 16:44

I will never book with them now.

Feel so sorry for you OP.

“At the time of booking”

clear as day

crabbyoldbat · 04/05/2023 16:53

If you cancel, still try to cancel your other bookings. I've found that theoretically non-refundable bookings can sometimes be refunded anyway (or credit given for future use), if you talk to them.

tappitytaptap · 04/05/2023 16:56

To whoever said this is a bargain price, I think we are probably going on the same holiday OP and whilst ours for similar was a couple of hundred quid more expensive, it is in the region of it- so no I don't think it WAS obvious

slowquickstep · 04/05/2023 16:59

Everyone now knows Royal Caribbean's customer service is appalling so can avoid booking with them.

To be honest, I wonder if it's common practice for RC to advertise at one price and then say oops! It's actually £xxxx more & see how much more they can get.
Surely that's illegal if it's the case, despite what their T&C say.

recklessgran · 04/05/2023 17:11

Where's the DM when you need them? You could try phoning the newsdesk OP - they'd love this but do it today before they get wrapped up completely in the Coronation.

Contact the guardian consumer champions, they are great with stories like this.

I work in travel. It is legal IF the price the holiday was booked at is obviously too cheap. So if the price was £2500 and should have been £3000, then there's an argument to say it's not a big enough price difference and could legitimately have been a special offer.

Given the OP has stated that most holidays were out of her price range, I think the company are on fair grounds to say it would have been obvious this was a bargain.

A one week cruise around Norway for 2 adults/2 children for £2.7k isn’t a “bargain” though. We are regular cruisers and this is about right, if not a bit overpriced for that kind of cruise. I really don’t know who would pay an extra £1500 on top.

They’re having a giraffe!

liverpoolgal82 · 04/05/2023 17:21

If you let them cancel and refund you , can’t you then book on the other websites that you are finding the same price? Then you’re going and not loosing £500 on other booked services.

omnishambles · 04/05/2023 17:21

I can heartily recommend P&O's Iona for this cruise OP - we went last July and had a lovely time.

UPDATE
I have finally been sent an invoice requesting an extra £410 pounds which would make my holiday a total of £3078. I can currently book it on the website for £2738. Also I have been given a credit of $50 not $100. When I phoned just to query it all I was told that I couldn’t cancel now as I ‘should have cancelled at the time’!!! I asked ‘at what time’ as I’ve only just been given the extra cost. She couldn’t answer. Currently on hold yet again for a supervisor which won’t appear yet again. I’ve had a cry now.

TrashyPanda · 04/05/2023 17:50

Wow.

they are really crap

babyproblems · 04/05/2023 17:52

Am I the only one who thinks over 2k for a cruise in Norway isn’t a bargain??? I can’t believe this is legal and I’d be speaking to CAB or similar seeking legal advice. This sounds literally like theft?! Surely they would refund you what you’ve paid if it’s a complete error. And I’d be demanding they paid all the other non refundable costs. Otherwise isn’t this just theft? What part of it is possibly legal and NOT just plain theft?! Good luck op

ChimChimeny · 04/05/2023 17:52

If there are other cruises with the same dates why don't you take the refund and book a.different one? Iglu.always give £50 discount and an online discount, but if you save t the quote and call them to book they honour the online discount too
