Royal Caribbean changing cruise price after paying

So, we have just about scraped the money together for a holiday in July. Lots of holidays out of our price range but managed to book a 7 day cruise around Norway for 2.7k - 2 adults, 2 kids. Booked it yesterday morning, paid in full, all good. I booked the hotel, parking, pet sitter etc. yesterday afternoon all non refundable. Got an email at 9pm last night to say price was wrong on website, price would not be honoured and offering me $100 in onboard credit (which we don’t need).

So this morning they still haven’t got in touch to tell me how much more I will have to pay if I don’t cancel. I phone up, it’s £1500 extra!!! I’ve now been on hold to speak to a supervisor for an hour but they say they won’t be able to do anything.

What on earth do we do? If we cancel we are £500 out of pocket. Any advice welcome. I’m so sad.

Bloody auto correct. That was supposed to say reputational damage!

EarlofShrewsbury · 04/05/2023 14:08

That's not super cheap, what are people on about?

I booked a fjords cruise over a year ago for a couple of weeks before the OP - 3 adults with P&O and paid £2.1k. I was looking at the RC anthem cruise and it was £2.7k back then. I went with P&O because I know RC attract more families with children and my kids aren't coming this time.

When did you book the additional hotel, car parking etc? And by what means (online?) It was my understanding that they are covered by the distance selling regulations whereby you have a 14 day cooling off period to cancel?

greyhairnomore · 04/05/2023 14:12

I travel a lot. Always able to cancel hotel and car park before departure.

I work in travel insurance. There is no way this will be covered under any policy.

Exactly. They can reserve the right all they like, they cannot override existing legislation.

Mummapenguin20 · 04/05/2023 14:14

Wow this is silly thought conformation mean’s confirmed

TheFifthTellytubby · 04/05/2023 14:15

The OP should compile a set of screenshots of all the PPs that say they would now no longer book with RC ... and then get in touch with Rip Off Britain!

JesusChristThatsTastyQuorn · 04/05/2023 14:17

Wow - we are planning a large family cruise (first one ever) to celebrate a significant birthday and will definitely not consider using Royal Carribean now. Shocking behaviour.

if you book through the likes of booking.com etc then you get the option of being able to cancel or not. Not being able to cancel is a lot cheaper which is why it's cheaper

honeyrider · 04/05/2023 14:25

I love cruising but this is just another example of why I wouldn't bother with RC.

My last cruise at Easter was €961pp and included the drinks package, crew tips and wifi so I'd think €2700 was a regular price.

I travel a lot too. Depending on how
someone books, they can’t always cancel before departure without incurring a fee.

diningiswest · 04/05/2023 14:27

I would take this to the consumer desk of a national newspaper - especially given what you say about the year you have had.

I agree with this.

Mum1976Mum · 04/05/2023 14:31

We booked everything as the cheapest option as we have no more room in our budget at all so nothing is refundable sadly. We have travel insurance through the bank so I guess I could try that if RC cancel our booking.

I‘m not sure I could face being a Daily Mail sad face sadly.

I was already anxious about a big holiday Covid. Honestly, now I’m thinking I’ll just let them cancel it and stay home. I just felt so bad our children don’t get to travel like we did when we were young and I thought a cruise would be easy. How wrong I was.

Op
don’t let this derail your entire family’s holiday plans!

you have a decent budget. You will be able to book

if anything good example to your odd re disappointment and dusting yourself off!

But presumably you are familiar at least with the pet sitter?

Newjobformoremoney · 04/05/2023 14:36

Hi OP
I am sorry you're going through this. Could you not rebook with Iglo? Let them give you a refund and just book through a 3rd party?
Don't let it spoil your holiday!

Yes, can you do this? As its still the same price. will buy you a bit more time if nothing else. So tell them you won't pay the extra and cancel it, then rebook exact same thing through someone else?
This must be so incredibly stressful and even if you get to go now at that price, they have totally put a complete damper on your excitement.

Justwingingit2005 · 04/05/2023 14:54

Just adding to this if u have booked a cruise on RC alcohol, fizzy drinks, milkshakes etc are not included. They are extra paid for add ons. As is Internet. Unless you prepay gratuities they are also billed at the end of your cruise unless you remove them at Quest services when you board the ship.

Nocutenamesleft · 04/05/2023 15:02

Mum1976Mum · 04/05/2023 11:17

Honestly, I don’t know what to make of it all now or where to go next.

Can’t you book it through the third party website at the price it’s advertised at?

mum11970 · 04/05/2023 15:04

Someone who knows how needs to link to this thread on the Royal Caribbean Twitter and social media pages. Hopefully they’ll realise that trying to strong arm more money out of customers who’ve paid in good faith isn’t good for their reputation. I certainly wouldn’t ever book with them.
OP don’t give up on going on holiday due to the shitty behaviour of this company, it sounds like you and your family need a well deserved bit of relaxation together

IMustDoMoreExercise · 04/05/2023 15:08

So sorry to hear this.

I hope you manage to go, but please check that your bank's travel insurance covers cruises as it often doesn't.
