Please help! ExDP stole DS birth certificate and changed his name without my consent

I'm currently in a domestic abuse situation and was preparing a bag to hand over to my dad with our essential documents and I come to find that DS birth certificate is gone and I went on the website to order a copy and I see that DS has had 3 name changes without my permission.
What can I do about this, I'm already reporting to the police but what else can I do

If your ex has links to other countries, can you get a stop/warning put on your child’s passport? ( just wondering - have no idea)

@Perpetuallyexhaustedtoddlermum start by contacting the registrar as they will have the paper trail. I think both parents have to agree to a name change so if he has forged your signature you can then take action to have the BC reversed back to the name you both agreed.

I don't think this is the issue because ex is British with no dual citizenship or links to other countries

@Perpetuallyexhaustedtoddlermum Also ask the registrar to put a note on DCs record that you must be physically present if anyone tries to change DCs name.

I didn't know I could do that. I'll make sure of it

They do. You have to get a court order to do it. Hes commited multiple frauds. Horrible prick.

Worth checking with his school too, if he is school-age. Has your Ex changed his name at school?

Sympathies, OP - what a nightmare. Sorry you are going through this 💐

Also apply to court for a prohibited steps order to stop him from doing anything to your childs legal documents wothout court application and your approval

I would still get a stop on your child's passport. Who knows why his name was changed. Your ex might well intend to take him abroad without your permission.

Thesharkradar · 29/04/2023 11:52

Nice detective work, now you are getting insights into his Modus operandi, does he know that you know?
If it was me I think I would quietly get it reversed but not tell him that I know, if you are going to take action against him don't tip him off an advance, it will be more effective if he is blindsided.
(Obviously I don't know him and you know best how to judge the situation)

He knows that I know but he gaslighted me and I've let him believe that I believe him. He's a grade A narcissist and an idiot to boot. The sword of Damocles is now dangling precariously above his head.
How did he think he'd get away with this I'll never know

Well played 👍
Let him carry on thinking he's much cleverer than you and it will be easy to out maneuver him.
You might want to be the one who delivers his well deserved comeuppance, or you might want to release him into the wild blithely thinking that he's master of all he surveys.
Personally I think I would release him because if he feels that you are the one who got one over on him that will focus his mind on wanting to pay you back, he might end up as a perpetual thorn in your side and I'm sure you don't need that.

VintageThoughts · 29/04/2023 12:45

He's definitely broken the law. A child under the age of 16 needs both parents' permission to change their name.

@Perpetuallyexhaustedtoddlermum IANAL but it is a reasonable request to prevent future fraud.
