Any legal responsibilities after inheritance from abroad?

Hope you can help me. I come from one of the European countries but have lived in the UK for 20 years. Back in my country of origin I partially own a family property (a quarter of). The other 3 quarters are owned by other family members. One of them have past away recently and I and the other family members inherited their part. So now we each own a third of the property.

There was no inheritance tax due in my country of origin due to the close family relationship.

Is there anything I need to do or pay in the UK?

Many thanks!

In terms of inheritance, no. UK inheritance tax is charged on the estate of a UK resident who has died, prior to it being distributed to the beneficiaries.

If you receive income from the property then you will need to declare that for tax purposes going forward.

If there is any likelihood of the property being sold in the future you may wish to check how you would be assessed for capital gains tax.
