Worth getting dual citizenship?

So I'm British but my grandfather was Jamaican, which entitles me to Jamaican citizenship by descent. I think it will be a bit of a pain to organise because he died (in Jamaica) about 20 years ago but I am in contact with other family members who could potentially get hold of documents that I'd need. Then again I'd need my mum's docs and she has also died. Is it worth it? Is there a benefit? I sort of want to do it to feel closer to my family there who I rarely see, but is it worth it for any other reason? Thanks

Do you identify yourself as Jamaican? Would you want to live there? Do you just visit? I would review what you feel and if it means a lot, go for it. Main advantage would be extended visits and living there one would think. Depends if you think it’s worth the effort.

It will help having family there who can get copies of documents. My Jamaican-born sister needed to get a copy of her birth certificate and dealing with the records office there, from here, was a nightmare.

I think unless you are considering living or investing there in property, for example, there is unlikely to be any benefit. There are other ways to honour your heritage.

I have dual citizenship (my dad is Italian). Obviously it’s helpful to have an EU passport for travel within the EU and I also plan to get my daughter a passport so she could study/work in the EU if she wants to. But in all honesty, it makes very little difference to my life and is a bit of a hassle to renew as I have to travel to Edinburgh. And having once had my Italian passport stolen and being in need of consular assistance I would recommend always travelling with your British passport!

Opened this thread to see what people say as my children are entitled to Jamaican citizenship and I'm contemplating whether it's something worth doing, pleasantly surprised to see yours is Jamaica too.
You have the same questions as I do so I'm no help.

For balance on this thread, my brother threw away his Jamaican passport after a lot of aggravation from immigration at Heathrow. He didn’t find it easy travelling with it.

TizerorFizz · 24/04/2023 08:30

The British ones just scan at Heathrow now so that’s an advantage of a British one!

DH and the DC have dual British/EU nationality and it’s proved useful so far.
Not sure about Jamaican unless it gives any advantages over British

If it’s just to honour your heritage and you’re not planning to live or work over there I don’t think it gives you any benefits, no. My daughter is entitled to South African citizenship but we haven’t bothered because for what it’s worth it’s too much hassle to sort.

I am entitled to another citizenship because of my father. But I have never applied for it because I don’t plan to move and there is no benefit.

I think it’s almost always a good idea if you have the option. If ever everything goes to shit in one place it can be a lifeline. It does seem fairly unlikely that the UK would ever be a place you’d feel the need to flee, but imagine if there was a another Chernobyl incident in Europe - suddenly an option to move to the other side of the earth might seem very attractive.
