Pensions on divorce - any experts here?

My EX has a generous pension. The pensions expert report said X% to be transferred to me. The report was based on CETV value back in Feb 2022. The pension will have grown by £20k or so since. Once the pension transfer is actually done, will I receive the X% of the Feb 2022 CETV or the CETV at the time of the actual transfer?

Ask for it to be updated

Mumof3confused · 14/04/2023 18:48

Well it’s not in my interest to having updated if it gives me more?

I’d it’s defined contribution it could well have shrunk since feb 2022 based on market performance

As far as I remember it was date of transfer. However I could be misremembering. I seem to recall that it was that way due to the fact that as has been said the value can fluctuate, and it's supposed to be equal.

It’s a teachers pension

It will have grown by about £18k in terms of the contributions made by him/govt since the CETV. Just wondering if this means I will get the percentage applied to a higher value than the one the report was based on?

I got shares in 3 of my ex’s pensions 1 x DB, 2 x DC. All recalculated at date of transfer (which was to my advantage, especially the DB pension).

@HannahinHampshire when you mean recalculated, do you mean by the pensions expert? Mine gives me a certain percentage so what I’m trying to understand is whether I get the percentage of whatever the value is at the time of the transfer?

It could be less though. I asked for a CETV on my DB pension 2 years ago and again recently. The amount is much less now than it was 2 years ago. It’s not based on contributions.

Its a final salary/defined benefit pension so I think it’s different to standard pension - mine is worth less now, too.

The same thing has happened to me. NHS pension. Yes, you get the same percentage, so if it was 20%, but it's gone up, you get 20% of the increased amount.

HannahinHampshire · 15/04/2023 22:51

@Mumof3confused - no, the actuary didn’t recalculate, I got the value at time of transfer. A couple of years (at least) had passed as I had a long, drawn out divorce!

DC pension 1 - actuary valuation was £27053, I got £30556.
DC pension 2 - actuary valuation was £41327, I got £52416.
DB pension (the valuable one) - actuary valuation was £83959, I got £190817 - so more than double.

(I’m doing some life admin tonight so found the documents)!

It's always revalued at the point of sharing so you don't get to choose.

So does this mean you take the percentage from the report and get that share of whatever the current value is at the point if sharing?

Yes

Mumof3confused · 16/04/2023 22:15

Great this is what I had assumed but then I started doubting myself 👍🏻
