Refusing payment for service not received

Hi, I wonder if anyone can advise on this query. My parents used to have Virgin broadband and television. They had repeated issues with poor coverage so that the internet was often extreme slow and the connection for online meetings was very poor. They also had frequent outages.
At the end of last year, Virgin went down for the entire street from the beginning of December. They switched to a different provider and cancelled their Virgin contract, telling Virgin explicitly that they would not be paying for December as they had not received any service for that month. The outage was not repaired until the middle of January by which time they were well set up with the new internet provider and have had no further issues. Virgin has continued to be problematic for the neighbours.
Since then Virgin have continued to demand payment and my parents have continued to refuse to pay. They now have been passed on to a debt collector. They are keen to get some advice as to the best way forward. Should they just pay it? Or continue to contest it? It is £95 so not a small amount.

Have they received compensation from Virgin? They are entitled to £9.33 for each day the service was not repaired. That should have been automatic. If not, they should pursue Virgin for that. On the information you have given, that should more than cover the amount due for the notice period.
