Landlord using hidden cameras

I have looked for advice online but nothing seems to resolve the scenario that I am in.

I rent a room in a property also occupied by the owner. I have discovered that the owner has on and off been using a hidden camera in a communal area. This communal area also covers the entrance to my room. I feel extremely uncomfortable that this has been the case and that I have been unwittingly filmed without knowledge or consent. I want to check the legality before approaching the owner.

Thanks

I would move out, start looking this evening.

You’re a lodger not a tenant.
I suspect you don’t have many rights in this situation unfortunately

Nimbostratus100 · 27/03/2023 19:55

cctv in a hallway, is what you are saying? is that right? quite common. No different from a doorbell

Gemstar2 · 27/03/2023 19:57

I have no idea but could you try your local citizens advice bureau?

BambiEyedBitch · 27/03/2023 19:59

It is a camera hidden amongst things in hallway. If I had been made aware, fine, I guess. But being watched without my knowledge seems an invasion of privacy.

What does your rent/lodging agreement say about security in general and CCTV in particular?

BambiEyedBitch · 27/03/2023 20:23

There is no mention of CCTV or security

So it’s not in a corner of the ceiling, say, to scan the entrance hall, it’s on a table or something pointing at your room?

BambiEyedBitch · 27/03/2023 22:13

I don't want to give too much away (it sounds silly but I have experienced other controlling behaviour) but it is hidden rather than being on show as such

Have you checked your room too and the bathroom for other hidden devices?

Because if you are a woman and the owner is a man then there could be something dodgy going on there...

I don't see what the point of having a camera in the communal space is...the owner is spying on the lodgers and that is just weird behaviour.

I would move out as this is just creepy.

BambiEyedBitch · 27/03/2023 22:25

The owner is female and a platonic friend. But I am finding it creepy, especially after having escaped from a controlling and coercive relationship.

I believe it’s very difficult for live-in landlords to get insurance that covers them against theft by a lodger.

So maybe your landlady is just looking to protect herself in case she gets robbed by you or someone you let in to the property?

Aquamarine1029 · 28/03/2023 00:25

Have you spoken to her about this?

This. Don't approach yet other wise you could me homeless

HairyFairy55 · 16/09/2023 13:03

Friend? Simple you ask about security, if she lies then its dodgy as f*ck. Also if she knows you came from a coercive relationship she may have taken it upon herself to 'protect' you. Unless you can offer more context no-one can help
