Uninsured car underage driver

Livedandlearned · 07/03/2023 19:38

A boy who doesn't have a provisional licence yet although he's 17 has driven someone else's car without permission.

The car has been damaged and the repair bill is £2300.

The car wasn't insured by the owner and nor did it have an mot.

The car owner wants the repair paid for understandably,

What is best moving forward?

I haven't seen the cost of repairs. My plan is to meet up face to face with the car owner and talk this through. I will offer to pay my fair share and not a penny more. I won't be paying my ex's half. It's that or I
Involve the police which they definitely don't want.

I remembered also that they were away for the weekend and left her15 year old son alone in the house. My ds stayed over the evening that it happened.

@Livedandlearned

I have to be honest I am concerned for your safety.

Thank you, I can always call the police. We live in a small town and I know these people, he's not done anything for 4 weeks since it happened and I can't just sit around wondering what's going to happen next. It's too stressful. I have to face it.

I would tell the police. If it’s gone from £300 to £2,300 what’s to say it won’t be £5,000 tomorrow and so on.

Livedandlearned · 09/03/2023 19:16

I don't know what the repercussions will be if I do that.

Tell the car owner you’re not negotiating and he needs to talk to ds dad.

refuse to have anything to do with any of it.

My brother was hit and nearly killed by an uninsured 17 yo. Luckily my brother was driving a European car (driver seat on other side) which saved his life. 17 yo got away with it for being underage and uninsured. My brother's insurance didn't pay as not his fault, and 17oy had no insurance that could pay for the damage. Went to court, my brother won but poor 17 yo darling had nothing to pay damage and even stupid bayliffs could not find his address that we could see from Google maps! But they were too dim to find it! Really made me question what's the point being insured if social liabilities get away with near murder due to a shocking justice system! Your 17yo will be fine!
