car insurance query

DSS has insured his latest car. He has 2, the second being an old Porsche boxter. Being a total eejit and not using the car often, he left it full of left over takeaways. He lives in a rural area and next thing rats have set up home in it. This was several months ago. You can't make this up! He has ADHD so it's par for the course.

Anyway, he called the insurer and looked at putting in a repair claim but decided to get the work done himself, which he did and it's fine. No more left over pizza.

The insurers records say cost £0 so it wasn't followed through. However they want to charge him an extra £250 on his renewal. They did say the zero claim would be removed but they haven't. Trying for a different company this 'claim' comes up and up goes the insurance quote.

I know you shouldn't talk to insurers unless you are actually going to claim , but is there a way around this? Can they charge him this extra for a zero claim? He has full NCD.

They are not charging for a zero claim, they are putting his premium up, which may or may not have happened anyway.

Just change insurer? Always best to shop around anyway and get a cheaper deal.

Hi there!

His current insurers have put a claim on to the CUE database. This is a database that most insurers will run ur details through when setting up a new policy to check for any undisclosed claims.

Even a zero pay out claim could increase your insurance as its still a reflection of driving history. But, im pretty sure this issue never would have been considered a claim as there was no accidental damage or theft etc involved. Im assuming any damage was just internal?

His current insurer needs to remove this "claim" off the CUE database so its not showing up for other insurers either. Until its removed from the database most insurers wont go ahead with a policy unless the claim is listed. It usually takes around 24hours for it to be removed and this needs to be done by the insurer that added it to the database.

It isnt guaranteed that ull get a cheaper premium once its removed, as the risk factors of ur insurance change daily. For instance, if theres been an increase of theft claims etc at ur post code in the last year, the premium is likely to increase. But the claim needs to be removed either way for u to get an accurate premium and if its not removed ull have this issue each year u try to get insurance xxx

the one he's tried so far says this note is on him file and therefore ups the insurance.

@Loki64 The rats set up home in the interior, but he had it all repaired (it was mostly cleaning) himself. Such an idiot!

The current insurers have said they will remove it but don't.

I wonder if he says it was a drunken joke (cos thats what it sounds like) they'll take it off. No, don't worry, he'll just tell the truth and all it needed was cleaning.
Thanks so much for the clarification, I'll send this on to him

Haha he wont be leaving his car like that again in a hurry!

I would persistently call the current insurer until its removed from the database.

Let me know how u get on! Xx

He had to pay £120 on top of his premium but apparently its now removed. Unfortunately I didn't get to him in time to advise all the other stuff. It only had a day or two before he was uninsured. He probably will leave his car in a state again.
