Hello, hope this is the correct board.
I’m not sure if I need to report this to my car insurers. I’ve never been in this situation before.
I was at a traffic light that has two lanes which then merges into a single lane after the lights. I was in the left lane, the other driver in the right lane. We were both second in the que at the light.
The lights turn green and we set off. As we approach the single lane to merge, my vehicle is ahead of hers by about half a cars length and (so at this point we are still in two lanes next to each other, beginning to merge, but I am ahead of her.)
All of a sudden, the driver on the right, sped up and tried to get ahead/go around me.
As a result, they hit a pedestrian island that was in the middle on the road- their front right hand hit the concrete island. They were fine and it was not a serious crash.
At the time I didn’t stop because I don’t feel that I was “involved” in the accident.
We were merging in turn, my car was ahead of theirs, they intentionally sped up to go around me /overtake and drove into an island!
I could understand if for example, we were parallel to each other and I was merging over to the middle and this “forced” her to either swerve to her right or if that stopped her from being able to merge into the middle by merging to the left, but ultimately my vehicle was clearly ahead of hers and she sped up to over take me rather than merge behind (as her vehicle was further back on the road then mine)
Now I’m worried they will report me to their insurers for causing the accident, even though my driving did not cause it the accident (i.e. My merging didn’t force her over and I was driving at an appropriate speed)
Any advice? Do I need to report this ?
