Insurers and third parties

I had a car accident, hands up - completely my fault. I informed my insurers to that extent and I gave my details directly to the third parties involved.

Is that my bit done?

As in, if the third party contacts me, I don't need to speak to them - is it just down to my insurance company to deal with now? I feel like this person is going to get a bit awkward and just want to know where I stand.

It is down to your insurance company now. If the third party or their insurer contacts you, refer them to your insurer.

CornishGem1975 · 07/02/2023 20:10

He keeps hassling me for more information - says he needs it for reporting to the insurance company, which I don't believe he does, as I have given a full report to my insurance company. Surely all he needs is my insurance details.

Well yes they will need your policy number and who you are insured with - you insurers won't necessarily contact the TP insurers they will probably wait for the claim to come in

Parky04 · 07/02/2023 20:13

You have provided your insurance details which is all the law requires you to do. I wouldn't engage any further.

CornishGem1975 · 07/02/2023 20:20

Thanks: I have just replied and said my insurance company have all this information and they will liaise with yours.

Can I just block him now? I have no need to talk to him any further?

@ivegotthisyeah He has that already. He asking for detailed information - what was the weather like, what speed was I going, what causes the crash. He says he needs it. I don't think that is correct.

Arh ok, he should know that if he was involved surely! Yeah I'd just refer him onto your insurers now

Sounds like he is trying to check your story to make sure he gives the same account. Tell him to give his own account to his own insurer.

CornishGem1975 · 07/02/2023 20:28

No he wasn't there at the time, it was a parked car. But my understanding is none of this is needed. Literally just needs my policy details.

I checked the online insurance thing and he's not insured.

prh47bridge · 07/02/2023 21:21

Whether he is insured or not has no bearing on this, other than the fact he will have to sort it out himself. He needs to talk to your insurance company. They will deal with him for you.

CornishGem1975 · 07/02/2023 21:28

Yes but I think the reason he's being a bit cagey and difficult is his lack of insurance as his car was parked in a public place.

Thanks - so I can just leave it to my insurance. I've done my bit, he has my policy details.

He’s got bigger problems if he’s not insured!

Sporty2022 · 07/02/2023 22:10

You give a statement to your insurance company, either online or phone. They’ll ask you questions, you answer them honestly.

You are not supposed to talk about the accidents details with the third party. He has to tell his own version of events with his insurance company.

Once you’ve exchanged details, you are not obliged or encouraged to do anymore than that with the third party. He shouldn’t be contacting you further , especially asking you questions about the weather ?!

Don’t engage any further, and make your insurer aware that you are being contacted by the third party who’s asking you questions. It’s entirely down to the insurance companies to decide who’s at fault and settle claims.

So you committed a criminal offence to check if he’s committed an offence?

It's public information. Anyone can check if any vehicle is taxed and insured.

I don't know why he wants this information if he's not insured. It sounds like what he might have been asked for on an insurance claim, but yes as PPs, give him your insurance company's details and tell him to contact them. Say they're managing all aspects of the claim and you don't expect to hear from him again, that any information required should be requested from them.

TBH if he's not insured I'd expect him to go very quiet.

You can legally check tax but not insurance. You can only check insurance if it’s your car or you’ve been involved in an accident and are claiming from the third party.
