Purchasing probate document from the .gov site - how confidential is it?

Hello,
I recently posted this on a dedicated legal advice forum but nobody seems to be able to help ... would any wise Mumsnetters know?

I would like to purchase a copy of the probate document for the estate of a family member. However, I am a bit concerned about if the person who (claims they were) the executor would somehow be able to find out about this - they can be a bit volatile.
My understanding is that, since it is a public document available to anyone they wouldn't be notified by the government or anything like that, but that they would be able to access that info if they got a court order (I highly doubt they would actually do this).
Is that right?

Thanks in advance to anyone who can shed some light on this.

No-one knows, no-one is notified, it's all just pinged off a faceless computer somewhere. Why would anyone go to the trouble of finding out who had access to public information? If they are the executor, it's not "their" document, it's a document with their name on it. If you are that frightened, get a friend to order it for you.

a probate certificate just has the name of the person deceased, the name of the person probate was granted and the date.

can I enquire why you want a probate certificate?

Are you looking for a will, with details of how the estate was left? Because as PP have said, a probate document just has the assessed worth, etc on it.

Yes, this (the assessed worth) is why I wanted to see it for myself.

Thanks to everyone who has commented :)

I hope you are able to find what you require

old probate indexes had the assessed with written on the index, so you could have checked jyst the indexes, but digitalisation has stopped that since around 2000s

Soontobe60 · 06/02/2023 10:17

I also wasn’t notified when my solicitor ordered a copy of my mums probate.
have you seen the will? You can order a copy of this too.

Thank you for the extra confirmation 🙂
No I've never seen the will ... after the help I've received on this thread I think I'll just go ahead and order everything I can from the .gov site and see what I can find out.

Thanks again to all who took the time to respond and set my mind at ease ... I didn't necessarily expect any responses at all! 😀
