How do I find out whether there are speeding tickets or parking fines in my name?

I have not had a chance to update my V5C since I moved. I know I need to do it quickly but in the meantime is there a way to check whether there are any fines etc against my name?

I think DVLA and other companies go by what's on the V5C not the driving licence re address for letters and tickets?

Thanks

You can update your V5C online, what stopped you ‘getting around to it’? Confused

I need to send a document for a new name as well. Moving is complicated in my particular situation but thanks for the judgement.

You didn’t say that in your OP.

There isn’t a way to check for fines in the interim.

I have looked into this further and if it's of help to anyone, you can contact councils' parking services and they will confirm any tickets in your name.

That will only tell you about parking tickets issued by your local council. It won't tell you about parking tickets issued by any other council, fixed penalty notices issued by the police, etc.

Wow, a lot of judgement / unhelpful sarcasm on this thread. There are plenty of reasons a person might not be able to update their V5C when they leave an address. We moved from our home into very unstable, temporary accommodation and didn't know how long we would be there for before moving into a more stable home. We didn't update our V5C to reflect the temporary addresses (we were in that situation for a few months in the end, and I did wonder the same as the OP regarding speeding / parking tickets etc) but did update it once we moved into a longer-term home.
Not everyone moves from one settled address to another. People become homeless and end up temporarily couchsurfing at friends' and family's places, or staying at a women's shelter, or bounced around from one BnB to another.

Check your credit score in case of any potential ccj - my DD had a horrible shock when she was refused credit, she checked experian and there was a ccj from an unpaid parking fine, she had moved house and knew nothing of the ticket. It’s taken her six months and £400 to sort it out and get it removed.

You could check your driving licence on line
to see if there have been any points isssued at the previous address on your licence

but that depends on if you have updated your licence to your new address

@BanoffeeBoat Thank you for responding. I don't know why people want to take time to bother writing unhelpful and unkind message but there we are.

Hope things are more settled for you.

I don’t think points can just be added to your licence as the police will first need to check who was driving. I sympathise that it isn’t easy for you to change your address but would advise you do so as soon as you can because failing to respond to the police in this way is a more serious offence. The police/dvla always go for car registered address because they don’t know who was driving the car so can’t do anything else.

Truthwillsetu3 · 31/03/2025 11:56

Or you can just ignore the tickets completely after six years they void anyway. But make sure you don’t park anywhere you shouldn’t and be sure to read all road signs thoroughly

Looloolullabelle · 31/03/2025 16:51

Check your licence online. I worked in insurance, you wouldn’t believe how many people got MS90 convictions for failure to disclose who was the driver because they never responded to the letters. Most were sent to an incorrect address because they hadn’t updated their V5. We didn’t used to insure MS90 convictions so they’d end up getting their policies cancelled too.
