Selling Car: Test Drive Insurance

After some advice please!

I've looked this up online and I'm still confused! We are currently selling our car and have advertised privately. I've had a few people email me and ask to 'book in a test drive'. I just want to check my understanding is correct!

The DRIVER of the car needs to be insured (we have the car insured for us to drive). So I need to see proof of THEIR insurance and it needs to be more than third party? As if they only have 3rd party to drive other cars, then any accidents and damage to other vehicles won't be covered?

Should I also ask to sign some sort of waiver?

We live in a busy area with lots of confusing roundabouts so I want to be sure any 'newbies' driving the car don't cause me extra expense

Thank you

Yes to all of that. If they have a ‘insured on any car clause’ I think it’s very likely it will only be third party though so that won’t be good enough for your purposes. They should get a temporary day cover policy specifically for test driving a private car that is fully comp. In theory you could add them to your insurance for your peace of mind that you were fully covered but A it would probably take age and B it’s expensive and unless they buy the car I guess you have no way of clawing that back and C it affects your ncb in event of accidents

We never let anyone drive our car when we did this. You are not a garage! The insurance is too difficult so you don’t let them drive it. We have sold some pretty fast cars in the past and would never get a random person insured.

Even if their insurance allows them to drive any car, any car other than their own will only be covered 3rd party won't it?

Thanks all - that's really helpful. I'll offer them a drive around or only a test drive if they have specific insurance for it

I have only sold two cars privately and I don’t offer test drives, not with the seller driving I mean.

It’s usually only garage staff who are comprehensively insured to drive any car. Most people are not. Therefore they don’t get to drive your car unless you are ok with third party only

It will only be third party. I would take them for a drive and just let them try out in a large empty car park. They want to test a slippy clutch type problem
