Car hit house

Hello
I wasn't sure which topic to put this in.

Last night my neighbour left the handbrake off her car and her car rolled down and hit my front door.

I went out and spoke to her and she was very apologetic. I had my little girl inside at the time so she said she would come back over.

My husband came home from work today and looked at the damage, it seems the frame on the front door has been smashed, a brick has come loose and there's lots of cracks in the brickwork.

My neighbour is lovely and I feel bad for her but we really need to get it checked out.

I just wondered if anyone knew where to start? I googled it and some say report to the police, some say our home insurance and some say her car insurance.

Thank you

I presume your house insurance giving them her car insurance so they claim it back and you don’t pay for it in higher premiums in years to come.

No need for the police, it's purely an insurance matter. Contact your home insurer and then ask your neighbour for her car insurance details. Do you have any cctv footage that will verify your claim?

Thanks both.

Unfortunately the ring doorbell faces the other way, helpful! But it did record our conversation afterwards with her admitting it and apologising so that would help.

Take photos of the damage to your house and also to her car.

You need her car insurance details.

A car crashed in to my home 2 years ago and the damage was about £8k. It was all covered by the drivers car insurance. We used our home insurance to claim and then they got it back from the drivers car insurance company. We had to involve the police because he was drunk.

I had to do this for my mum, although her house was hit by a drug driver.
You make the claim through your home insurance but will need to give the details for the car.
They will reclaim the costs from the car insurance.
It was a bit of a faff but there was no argument about the payout and no increase in her premium.

Police was involved in mums too as driver was off his face, he literally sat in the car giggling until the police arrested him 😳 his car had to be towed. Thankfully the tree in the garden took the brunt of it.
Your neighbour will need to report it to her insurance company.

My house was hit by a drink driver. Police were there. All went through their car insurance - i think getting home insurance involved would've complicated things.

However because of what the damage was, it wasn't urgent whereas sounds like yours needs fixing Asap so perhaps home insurers would help? You need to be clear that it's the car at fault though, the car insurance should cover it.

Aquasulis · 30/12/2022 10:02

Report it to your insurance and give time driver details and reg etc

Chasingsquirrels · 02/01/2023 22:33

I had very similar a few weeks ago, although it was into my detached garage.
I initially phoned the car owners car insurers to see if they wanted to get involved in sorting it, having been passed from pillar to post they weren't interested and told me to claim on my house insurance.
My home insurance are dealing with it and they will reclaim from the car owners car insurance.

CoffeeBoy · 02/01/2023 22:38

Your home insurance and asap, if there’s cracks it might be structurally unsafe.?

Roomarmoset · 06/01/2023 14:50

Thanks all. Neighbour wasn't happy as she was hoping to just get her car fixed and that's it!

We got her car insurance details and have put in a claim with our house insurance 🤞🏻

We had the same, but in our case, my neighbour went bat shit crazy and deliberately drove her car into our house. We told our house insurance (we had to so they could shore up the house and make it safe) who claimed from her car insurance. Our future premiums were not affected and we got our excess back too. All good on that side

My word of caution to you would be that DO NOT let your insurance company talk you into a repair that you are not 100% confident about. Without going into to many details, the loss adjuster convinced us that we didnt need certain work doing (which we actually did) and the builders that the insurance sent round did such an appalling job of the repair, that the house was deemed unsafe to live in and we had to move out until it was properly sorted. We had over 1 year of sheer hell and months of living in a hotel room with a small child.
