If you have had a relative die, you are in the will and probate has been granted, when would you expect to be informed regarding the fact you might have inherited something.

I assume it would be the executor doing the informing?

Thank you

The executor cannot be forced to distribute the estate until a year after probate has been granted. Some estates can be dealt with quicker than that, some take longer.

Thanks for the reply, does that mean, the executor doesnt have to tell anyone they have benefited from the will till a year after probate has been granted?

When probate is granted the Will becomes a public document and you can order a copy for £10

prh47bridge · 19/12/2022 19:41

If you know you are in the will, surely you already know if you will benefit from it? However, you can ask the executor for a copy of the will. They don't have to provide one but, if they refuse, you can buy a copy from the probate registry.

Its not me that is benefiting from the will, its a wee bit more complicated than that tbh,

I am just trying to figure out if I am being lied to.

Not necessarily. I was in my father’s will but didn’t end up benefitting as he left a set amount of money to each of his grandchildren then the residuary to be shared between his children. There was no residuary once all the debts, funeral and individual amines paid out.

Now probate has been granted, it’s possible to download both the probate document and a copy of the will. This will show how much was left in the estate and who the beneficiaries are.

I have those, its how I know probate has been granted.

The next bit might be more for relationships than here, but a "well meaning" relative shitty grabby brother let me know and sent me screenshots.

But DP has said, he hasnt been told anything about any inheritance, which is why I am now trying to figure out if the exectutor is waiting to wind everything up before saying anything or DP is lying to me.

If you are unsure that the screenshots are accurate, get your own copy of the will. It costs £1.50. If you are trying to figure out whether your partner has been told about the inheritance, no-one on here can help you. There is no way of knowing whether the executor will have told him.

I have done that as well now, I have also asked my partner if anything has been said to him.

What I was trying to figure out, is if the executor has to tell him before probate is granted, after probate, or doesnt have to mention it till its all sorted and the money is about to be sent out, I would also assume my partner would have to send some type of ID if solicitors are executors

I really dont want to think my partner has bullshitted me about this and my brother doesnt know what a can of worms he has potentionally opened with his grabby fucking ways.

Also if my partner is lying to me, I have other financial stuff I need to consider and none of this is something I wanted to deal with the week leading up to Christmas, but it might be the final nail in the coffin, which again is not something I wanted to be dealing with this time of year
