Declaration of parentage with no birth certificate

Can you apply for a declaration of parentage without a birth certificate/no known details about the child in question? I.e full name, d.o.b, where the child was born?

There must be a birth certificate if born in the UK. Aren't these used to legally declare who the father is? The mother is obviously known in these cases. What are the circumstances? More info is needed.

Baby has been registered in the UK. Can the father apply to the courts with no information about the baby?

Sorry should of made it clearer.

No, they can’t without details of the baby’s birth. Somebody determined enough could probably use a private investigator to locate you and discover the baby’s details - do you think it’s likely they are this determined?

Pillowfighter516 · 27/11/2022 14:31

@ComtesseDeSpair even with the address can they still apply? Without the child's details?

Sorry I was in an extremely abusive relationship and obviously fearful for DC.

If you know childs name, date of birth, and place of birth you can order a birth certificate from GRO.

No, as above they can’t apply to court for a DOP or order a birth certificate without details of the baby’s birth. There’s a possibility they could discover enough information to attempt to do so, if determined enough. If you’re concerned about abusive partner is trying to locate you and your baby, it’s a police matter.

And if you don't, but have some idea of the background, you can go to a major library and look at the microfiche of the birth index and then apply for a certificate if it's too recent to be on Ancestry or Find my Past. There is always a way

Onnabugeisha · 27/11/2022 14:46

You can find birth certificates using the mothers name and address too.

Might want to apply for a non molestation order telling ex to keep clear of you OP “and any dependents or other household members” as a way to cover a child without naming them.

Exactly this. You don't even need to know the exact details. The GRO ask you for the year of birth and can even search the years the other side too. You are asked to fill in as many details as you know such as surname and given name at birth, where born etc but the only compulsory fields are year of birth, surname and sex. Obviously searching for males with the surname Thomas born in 2003 is going to return many more results than a much more specific search.

Birth, marriage and death certificates are public record and anyone can order a copy of one for any reason. Genealogists do it all the time.

You are not going to be able to keep a birth certificate secret. Not a lawyer, but I would advise seeing one to discuss your concerns.
