Is this Fed Ex “bill” a scam?

Some months ago DP received a bill for payment from Fed Ex. It was addressed to his work address but did not have his name, just the address of his business. He has not ordered anything on which import taxes would be due which is the suggestion on the bill. We googled this at the time and it appeared to be a common scam.

A few more of the bills appeared but believing it was a scam we ignored them. A month or so ago a letter came from a debt recovery agency. There was no response from the only telephone number and no response from the Fed Ex number either. No way of e mailing either. In the end DP sent a letter to the debt agency explaining that the bill was nothing to do with him, that he had not ordered anything from overseas never mind anything likely to cause over £1k in tax. He sent the letter recorded delivery. He’s contacted CAB, FCA and Fraud Action but to no avail. This week another bill came from Fed Ex again addressed only to his business and a further letter from the debt recovery agency making no reference to his letter.

It’s becoming very stressful and worrying. Does anyone have any experience of this and any practical advice? We are going round and round in circles and unable to speak to a human being.

Has he tried calling FedEx using their website number?

Or Facebook or twitter?

The number just rings our. We haven’t tried Facebook or Twitter as yet. That’s a good idea although Facebook often doesn’t seem to be monitored by companies these days.

Have you checked at the Companies House website that the debt collection agency actually exists?

Contact the debt recovery agency to ask for proof of the debt. They will either send it so you'll know what it is or won't in which case you needn't worry as they will need it to take the claim further forward.

Has he used any contractors that may have had something delivered to that address?

thanks all - definitely a bona fide debt collection agency. Appears to have been someone importing and exporting using DP’s business address. We have reported to police and informed Fed Ex and the debt collection company that he is not responsible for the excise duties.
