Oh crap - speeding and driving license in old name

I shall preface by saying I know this is entirely my fault.

I haven't got around to changing the name on my driving license to my maiden name following my divorce.
I got a speeding fine.
I sent the form back with my marriage cert and decree absolute which show my maiden name (what I use now and what the car is registered under) and my married name (which is on my license).
They've written back and (fairly enough) said that can't proceed with the fine/point/speed awareness course, because of the different names.

So, I have to change my license. Within 21 days.
Looking on the web, in the best of times it takes 3 weeks for DVLA to send a new license, but post covid it can take 8 weeks.

So, it looks like I'll get a court summons.

Is it actually illegal that the names don't match?

I don't know if it makes any difference but I renewed my license earlier this month and i got my new one 4 days later.

That's encouraging, though a renewal is more straight forward I think.

My son's passport renewal only took a few days earlier this year, when people were waiting months so maybe that good fortune is still with me.

I think you'll be ok. Mine came quickly too.

For a name change or just renewal?

I've had the same experience recently with changing my name on my licence; new licence was on my doorstep inside of 5 days.

Oh that's encouraging, thank you.
My local PO doesn't have the form, so I need to go to town. I'll have to do that later. I just emailed my boss to tell him I needed a couple of hours off, but I'll just do it this evening instead.
All I can do is fill the form and get it sent off.

Don't get married, don't get divorced, don't change your name, don't speed.
Or if you do, keep your documents up to date.

You need to do a paper application to change your name - current processing time is 4 weeks. It might be quicker to change your V5 back into your married name so they match. Then once this is resolved change everything into your current name.

Sent it all off this morning. 🤞🏼it comes back quickly.

We just moved house and mine, DH’s and DS’s license all came back in four days

TheOrigRights · 29/11/2022 10:56

My new license arrived this morning, so that's just 12 days since I sent it, and only 5 working days for them to process it.

So, now I can get on with the task of paying the fine or going on a course.

Relieved.

Hey!

this has happned to me, I only noticed today when I was sending my form off. Do you think I should just go ahead and send off my DL and get my name changed whilst the fine is being processed with the authorities! It’s stressing me out the thought of £1000 fine

Hawkins0001 · 30/05/2023 21:40

@TheOrigRights did you get it sorted

Mrskrd · 01/06/2023 22:59

Did you get this sorted!

im also in this pickle and worried about the £1000 or court summons. 🥺
men don’t realise how hard it is filling in all the forms whilst looking after the children, the house, the dog, working and trying to eat and sleep!

@Hawkins0001 @Mrskrd Cutting and pasting from my post a few up "My new license arrived this morning, so that's just 12 days since I sent it, and only 5 working days for them to process it.

In summary, yes.

What's it got to do with men?
