Hotel possibly undercharging me

So I’ve booked a hotel stay for next summer through booking.com and essentially the price I’ve been given and paid seems ridiculously low. I’ve checked it again with same dates and it’s now about £2500 more than we’ve been quoted (and paid in advance.)

Does anyone know what might happen? I’m panicking that I get there and they suddenly demand more money than we can afford!

It depends if it’s obviously an error.
If they’re charging £99 per night instead of £500 it’s pretty clearly wrong and they can cancel, but if it was £300 instead of £500 it’s not quite as clear cut, and Booking.com would likely expect them to honour the deal.

We had this once through booking.com - I can't say what would have happened as covid cancelled the holiday as we were meant to go in May 2020. I fully expected the hotel to cancel because we'd got such a bargain but we got to March/April before the whole holiday had to be cancelled - we were close tot he date and all seemed OK

I don't think that they can suddenly charge you more but I think they can cancel a booking.

Contact the hotel and ask to confirm your booking, what is included, what was paid and for how long, ideally do it on email so you have it in writing.

Crazykatie · 03/11/2022 17:14

If you are using Booking.com check carefully you may find that you pay when you arrive. As as written above email the hotel and get a confirmation in writing, you may have got a good deal.

QueSyrahSyrah · 03/11/2022 17:16

Very unlikely they'd charge you more on arrival, much more likely someone will notice beforehand and cancel / refund the booking.

Even more likely if you get in touch with them to query it.

For such a large amount if be tempted to double check with the hotel what they understand your booking to be.
I once booked through booking.com for 5 people for one night. My booking quite clearly said 5 people, 1 room. When we got there the hotel swore that it was a booking for 2 people and we ended up having to buy a 2nd room.

Similar happened again, I definitely booked for 5 but when the confirmation came through it said 2 people so I cancelled and booked direct instead.

I don't trust the site at all.

Quick question actually OP, is it for a particular event that means everywhere might be sold out?

Snowpatrolling · 03/11/2022 17:38

Ring the hotel and check there is actually a reservation.
my friends MIL booked a villa on booking.com, when they got there turns out it was someone’s house and they had been scammed out of a substantial amount of money. Then had to fork out for other accomodation in Spain!

The site is only as good as the information uploaded by the hotel - if it’s wrong that’s the fault of the venue.

We had this, no issues when we arrived at the hotel - we had a discount of around two hundred pounds per night. Just to let you know if you are logged onto BA Executive Club and Avios it also gives you booking.com discounts, and you get discounts through booking.com occasionally depending on how often you have used them, and how close together you are using them. Was absolutely no issue for us. Hotel explained that they sell rooms at a cheaper rate and then increase prices as availability decreases, particularly in high season.

drpet49 · 05/11/2022 17:57

I would never use booking.com

Danikm151 · 05/11/2022 18:06

It’s probably surge pricing to account for demand. It’s usually cheaper if you book in advance, more people book the higher the price goes.
It’s the same with coaches

Unbearablebare · 05/11/2022 18:59

It's the same with flights as well.

hellsbells99 · 05/11/2022 19:05

It’s not for Liverpool is it? And you booked before it was announced they were hosting the Eurovision Song Contest?

rockywilderness · 11/11/2022 09:49

Thank you all so much for the replies - it's for a place in Switzerland and no events that I'm aware of, just part of a touring holiday (long delayed due to covid). My DH is being very calm and reassuring me that we have a car, if they cancel us as we arrive we can drive pretty much anywhere and will find a bed for the night... (I remain unconvinced as it's high season in a very touristy area..). Might pack a tent just in case!
