Where do I stand, new roof issue

We had our roof replaced just over a year ago and part of the replacement was new glass put in the existing sky light.

Since the work was completed the sky light has leaked. They came out 3 or 4 times after and it seemed to be fixed till January this year when we had heavy snow and the sky light leaked again. I called and also texted the roofer and he never got back to me. I will hold my hands up and say I never chased it further due to various family and work issues taking up my time and energy. However about 3 months ago I did get back in contact, this time just texting so that if he did reply I had something in writing. He did reply saying he'd make time to come out but of course never did. I've texted twice again.

Today the weather is horrendous and the leak is just getting worse. I'm concerned it's going to start damaging the new (extortionate) roof.

I really don't know where to go with this. I have in writing the work comes with a 10 year guarantee which I assumed covers things like this. I've been really patient with him and polite but he obviously just can't be bothered trying to find where this issue is coming from.

Can anyone help?

Get quotes to fix it then send the roofer a letter before action setting out the facts, stating what you want (him to cover the cost of fixing it) and giving him a reasonable deadline to respond (28 days is normal). Include a list of documents you will rely on if this goes to court and any documents you want from him. State that if you don't receive a satisfactory response in that time, you will take legal action without further notice. Assuming he doesn't respond, you can then start a claim.

Make sure you are claiming against the right person. If he trades as a limited company, the company is liable, not him personally.

Thanks for this. That's super helpful.

Do you have legal cover with your home insurance? That may be an option to pursue...

Unfortunately not but you've reminded me when I was in the office last week I noticed on the back of the toilet something my work are offering which includes legal advise. I'll ask someone next week who doesn't wfh to go and get the details for me!.
