RENT increase from £700 to £1750!

Hi, my mum has rented a property for over 30 years. Her rent for the last 10 years has been below average at £700. However, for most of that she put up with rotten wooden window frames do more! The landlord had to replace these and upgrade to central heating to comply with energy performance laws. She has just received notification it will be increasing over£1000 pcm from November. Is this legal or is there a cap per year it can increase? TiA

Is it a house? If so could she not move to a flat?

Has she spoken to the LL about what she can afford? A lot of them would be happy to accept a slightly lower amount than they asked for in exchange for keeping a decent tenant!

Sorry - could you clarify please - has her rent gone up from £800 to £1,800, or to £1,000?

I think the title of her post makes it's clear. Rent is now £1750 a month!

That is an extortionate rent increase but as others have said it sounds like it was very low for a long time and what rental costs are for similar properties in the area. I just don't know how people are going to cope with such high rents and I guess the government are just going to have to put up local housing allowances so they will have to find the money to help people. It's a shocking situation given how low wages are. My friend's niece rents a 3 bed semi in slough and it's '£1800 a month paid for mostly by benefits. No wonder the government are in financial trouble.
