Quick cheap will

I'm a SAHM but not married to my DC's dad. We're just currently sorting out things to make sure we would be supported if anything happens to either of us and I have just realised (naively I appreciate) that not being married, without a will and with a DC under 18 the most 'entitled' person would not be each other.

I fully appreciate we have been very stupid to have not done something about this sooner so we want to make sure we have something quickly in place. We will be sorting out more detailed wills in time but for now we really just need something that names each other and also names someone nominated to look after DC if anything happens to both of us.

Is there a recommended service that would do this asap? Ideally that doesn't cost the Earth and if online even better?

Thank you

Marlowe Wills. Very efficient, run by an actual solicitor (many cheap will writing services are not), very good value, the company of a MNer.

You should do LPAs too.

Are you on the deeds of the house?

Who have you each named as the beneficiary on any pension? Pensions are not part of your estate so you need to name the beneficiary to your pension provider.

I would agree with this if she’s still around, I can’t @ her on here

Thank you both for your replies, I'll get on to them asap.

We're currently renting but he does own property that he rents out. I assumed that would form part of his estate if anything happened? But then there would be inheritance tax to pay.
We both have investment accounts which I was unsure about but some cursory research it looks like with a Grant of Probate the executor will have access.

I have named him as beneficiary of my pension and I believe he has done that with his through work.

Thank you again!

You can @ her but you won't be offered her username - you are only offered the names of users who have contributed to this thread. She is @mumblechum0 and she is definitely still around.

AnnaMagnani · 24/09/2022 10:27

If you google Marlow Wills and email them, Yvonne will get back to you very quickly.

You can of course DIY your LPAs which is cheaper.

I did not know that - thank you

NoSquirrels · 24/09/2022 10:32

And you definitely don’t want to get married? Cos that would be quick, cheap and sort all the issues like inheritance tax!

CharlotteSt · 24/09/2022 10:45

Might be cheaper to grab a couple of witnesses, pop to the register office and actually get married 😊

Alienbigcat45 · 24/09/2022 11:04

Is your DP in a trade Union? Many offer free wills which includes a mirror will for partners.

HappyHamsters · 24/09/2022 11:08

I would look at your local solicitors and see which ones are part of the charity free will service. You get a free Will in exchange for a donation to a chosen charity when you die.

SherbettingSherbert · 24/09/2022 11:54

@NoSquirrels @CharlotteSt yeah appreciate that might be a quick and simple solution but perhaps a little more emotionally complicated! I think for both of us an ideal wedding would not be too quick or end up cheap

Think we'd both like to but for now just need to get the basics in place asap Smile

@Alienbigcat45 no trade union for DP's profession. But my mum is and she was looking at updating hers so will mention this to her. Thank you for mentioning.

Sorry but what is LPA?

Sorry but what is LPA?

Lasting Power of Attorney. Allows you to nominate someone/some people to deal with your affairs when you are unable to (health) or at any time (finance). It can't be done once you lose capacity, so it's always worth sorting early.

Lasting Power of Attorney.

The process by which you give someone you trust to make decisions in your behalf should you lose the capacity to make decisions (e.g by dementia, stroke, catastrophic but non fatal accident). Two types of LPA: one for your financial affairs, one for health and welfare.
