Had cancer in the past... what if I change jobs?

Hi everyone,

I had cancer two years ago. My current employer has a good sick-leave policy and I had 6 months of sick leave on full pay and have been very accommodating to me since then. I'm in the UK and understand that I'm now covered by the Disability Discrimination Act forever (I'm in remission).

However, how does that work if I change employer? Do I have to tell them in advance that I had cancer or can I wait until after I start and then tell them? Do they even need to know at all (I presume that's up to me)? If I tell them before I start, at what point do I have to say something... at the point of application? At interview?

I unfortunately do need flexible working arrangements (wfh) due to side-effects of the cancer treatment, so I feel I would have to make any new employer aware of that before reaching the point of job offer, but similarly I wouldn't want to be discriminately rejected because of that. I know the Discrimination Act is there to help prevent that, but nonetheless I'm trying to be realistic about how I may be viewed. The flexible arrangements are due to physical impairments only... absolutely no effect on my ability to be successful in the role.

Any advice gratefully received!

Thank you.

You do not have to tell them in advance or at all. However, they don't have to make any adjustments to accommodate your disability unless they are aware, or should be aware, of it. Of course, if you get a job that offers the flexibility you need as standard, you will not have any need to tell them.
