Council haven't applied single person discount

Hi, I just realised today that for the last 6 years I've not been receiving the single person discount (25% off) for my council tax. I vividly remember speaking to someone when I was moving and talking about this - had it set up at previous address. I assumed because I moved to a different area it was just a higher amount but today I realised that's not the case. Is there anything that can be done? Sorry I'm not sure if I'm on the right thread or which one to post on. Really upset here thinking of all the money that could have been saved over the years, especially when I've been struggling.

Contact the council would be the first thing to do.

Mossygreenchypre · 03/09/2022 14:58

Yeah contact the council ASAP, not sure if you'll get much back.
My council sends me a paper bill at the beginning of every financial year so I can check all is correct.

Yes I need to wait until 9am on Monday morning to speak to someone, so thought I'd try here to see if anyone's experienced similar so I can get some advice.

I do get the letters and I've been stupid to not calculate it up. Just assumed it was already applied.

I have googled and apparently it can be backdated for up to 6 years.

My mum discovered similar when my DD died, something to do with having Alzheimer’s meant he wasn’t liable for council tax. I fought long and hard and got a refund back to 2017, but I had to provide medical records going that far back and fight tooth and nail. Don’t let it go, they are very tight fisted are councils.

Thank you so much! It gives me so much hope. Definitely won't let it go, no idea why it was marked off and I feel so stupid for not noticing. I feel sick at the amount of money it's added up to be over the years and at times I've really struggled. That but extra would have made such a difference at that time. But I only have myself to blame for not noticing before now

DH, who is a lawyer (though not in this field), successfully helped a friend claim back six years' worth of single person discount. The friend had rung the Council to tell them when her partner moved out and assumed the discount had been applied, but it hadn't, as she realised much later. Six years is the maximum you can claim. The case was dealt with by the Valuation Tribunal Service.

I doubt it. Do you have written proof that the discount was agreed and the council negligent. All you can do is reapply online now.

As others have said, yes you can.

They are tight-fisted, so if a phone call yields no results, make the complaint in writing, and you may need to escalate to the VOA.

Please come back and let us know how you get on!
