How do I prove I am who I am on my birth certificate with no official name change...

New account as TOTALLY outing!
When I was born, I was given my married parents surname ( name 1 )
When I was around 10 my parents split up and I took my mothers maiden name - there was no paperwork, no deedpoll nothing ( name 2 )
When I was 16 I got my NI number/card in name 2
When I got married, my maiden name was name 2 and now I have name 3
I worked for an airline where we could add family members, I couldnt add my siblings as we had different names (airline had my first name as name 2 and my siblings had name 2)
I'm now looking at getting my Irish Citizenship (via the Grandparent route) but I cannot prove that I with name 3 am also name 1

Does anyone know what I can do?

Did you not have to show your birth certificate when you got married? In name 1?

Narcheska · 18/08/2022 14:32

Do you have a U.K. passport surely you would have needed your birth certificate in name 1 to get that if there are no legal name change documents for name 2.

If your name was changed legally through deed poll and you have no paperwork to prove this and you have used name 2 to get married your marriage license isn't legal... this happened to a friend we live n.ireland things may be different here but don't think that much

Can you call them and ask them? I had a similar issue with names and a passport application and they were very helpful when they called.

They may request something like an affidavit or signed document from you.

ChicCroissant · 18/08/2022 14:41

Surely it's name 2 that you can't prove, you have documents for 1 and 3? Have you only had a passport in name 3?

Are your siblings name 2 or 1? In your paragraph about not being able to add them on to your airline account you say you are all name 2!

FWIW, I have a similar surname history, and both name 1 and 2 are in the parish records and on my wedding certificate. I wasn't too keen on it at the time but it would help in this situation! Was your NI number issued under name 1 or 2?

Have you thought about signing a deed poll now renouncing both of your previous names and confirming that your new name is name 3?

I think you can register deed polls with the Supreme Court should should hopefully be sufficient evidence of your former name and new name. You might need to get someone who knows you under all 3 names to sign an affidavit to confirm that you are the same person

Do a deed poll now but there is never any need to enroll it - it's an entirely unnecessary step that just costs time and money,

JennyMule · 20/08/2022 16:22

A statutory declaration setting out your name history/usage should be sufficient. I did one for a friend a while back when the UK passport office couldn't get the hang of her having 2 names with her name after marriage being different from husband's due to cultural naming convention in his country

ManorPiggy · 20/08/2022 16:28

Deed poll is just a written declaration that you were previously known by name A and now wish to be known as name B. You don't have to pay for it or register it anywhere. I have done this and it was accepted by passport, driving licence, bank etc. Can't you do that?
