Should I get a Will?

I was just wondering at what age do people tend to set up a Will?

I am in my early 30’s and now have a baby. My partner and I do have life insurance but I am debating whether I should also get a Will. I have more savings than my partner as I got some inheritance when my grandma died. While I don’t mind him getting some of that if I passed before him, I also want to make sure our child definitely gets some (possibly most as my partner is not great at saving his money!) so that he has a good life.

am I a bit young to be thinking of this? I’m not ill (as far as I’m aware) but as a child I was convinced I would die young and didn’t think I’d ever be this old haha. Or should I be waiting until I am in my 50’s or 60’s to set up a Will.

Also, what is the general cost of creating one? Is it best to do one in person with a solicitor or are online ones/write your own just as legally binding?

Definitely make a will. And you need to update it intermittently.

Obviously you need to cover finances but also think about, if the worst happened to you both, who would look after your DC.

We had my DP first and then very good friends next as DC would be able to continue at school and with their friends.

For something simple you can use a will writer. Ours cost about £20 a decade ago (and needs updating) but they are still reasonable. I think there is someone on MN who is recommended. Not sure about kits from the post office.

@whiteroseredrose thank you. I didn’t even think of the possibility of something happening to both me and DP so definitely a good point to make sure that is covered!! Thank you 😊

Definitely get a will and use a STEP solicitor to consider all aspects of your personal circumstances.

Yes definitely get your will sorted. Also consider if you were to pre decease your DP what would you want to do with your assets- eg I have had mine ringfenced/put in trust for DC so it cannot be taken from them by any new DW/DP. A solicitor will advise you better on this aspect.

You really should have a will and you really should get proper advice, especially as you are unmarried and have a child.

We did ours online with Mumsnetter @Mumblechum (Google Marlow Wills). She was great.
