Are these companies worth it? Or suspect? Is it better to go to a solicitor who won't cost too much? Any suggestions of who to use?

But some of them then want you to pay a huge amount extra to change say ..... land registrary to tenants in common, can't I do that myself?

Ours isn't complicated. Very basic. Ds1 is old enough to now be executor and guardian to ds2. It'll change in a few years because they'll both be adult.

Anyone done yours recently? Any suggestions of a good company to use? Years ago one MN'er used to do everyone's! Wink

Good question!

Barleysugar86 · 13/08/2022 11:45

I recently did mine for free here and it was great www.lawdepot.co.uk/contracts/last-will-and-testament-uk/#.YveAVNPMI-Q

You have to sign up for their service and cancel in a week and then you aren't charged.

They guide you through all the questions and then produce the final document for you. It seems really comprehensive- covers what happens if beneficiaries named don't survive you etc. I don't see why you'd need to pay

Mumblechum on here did mine, she was excellent, very helpful great at explaining stuff.
Not sure if she still does them.

That's it Blue, Mumblechum! Grin

Like I say ours seems relatively simple, or well I think so. One firm quoted us £1500 to do the extras.

Married with 2 kids, no property abroad. Not huge house so no major IHT issues. Passes to spouse, initially, then dc. 1)Need to change it to tenants in common, so it passes to dc. 2)Need power of attorney.

But friends of mine with elderly parents have sorted power of attorney themselves. So what I'm asking is, do I need to pay more, why can't I action those things myself?

I did one for my father before he died, online, it was straightforward, everything spilt between 3 siblings. Also did one for my father in law, again straight forward, everything left to only son. When they both died and estate went to probate, everything was fine. I’ve copied the exact wording in those Wills for myself, DH and my Brother. They are ok if estate is simple, but the company offered advice and made suggestions. I was also given the option to get Power of Attorney forms for FIL which I did do, but never needed.

We can get ours free through our house insurance. Worth checking if you can too. (We are with More Than and got the legal cover add-on.)
