Dear aunt died a couple of weeks ago.
She had lived in a care home for a few years.
No house to sell. No shares etc.
After paying for her care for the last few years
all that's left is £99780.
I am trying to get paperwork together from when
she went into the home. Unfortunately her daughter
who was in charge of her finances has died.
I am next of kin and named as joint executor.
Would it be worth getting a solicitor or do probate myself.
A friend thought I'd still have to find all the information
any advice welcome.

Very easy to do yourself, i did MIL's last night and it was much simpler than I expected

It's very straightforward to do it yourself. Even if you get a solicitor, you will still have to gather all the information and send it to them.

I did probate for a couple of relatives recently and it was easy - however their estates weren't that complicated and only involved bank accounts, shares and cars. No property.

I had to do tax returns too.

You can always start and then if you get stuck get help later

I applied for probate for my mums estate, did it on-line, really easy if you're under the threshold for inheritance tax, if I've read you OP properly the amount is under £100k? So way under the inheritance tax.
It cost me £280 which included ordering additional copies of the probate certificate and took me a couple of hours to complete, house, bank account, cash gifts that mum had given before she passed.
The solicitor quoted £1500 🙄
Then post the original will (address is online) registered delivery and add a letter quoting the unique ref no that it gives you online, you may need to explain that the other executor has passed away, maybe send a copy of the death certificate?
Our other executor dropped out so we had to fill in a form and send that with the original will.
All the info you need is on-line, you can't go wrong really, it took approx 7 weeks to probate being granted and receiving the probate certificates.

Probate only took us about Two months too. One thing that was pleasing was that everyone involved was really helpful including the banks. It was a very positive experience. We had to cancel lots of accounts such as betting accounts, sky , insurances etc etc and literally all of them were helpful

Same, people were so helpful, bank was great, mobile phone just closed the account with no charges, water company has given us 2000 gallons of water free, council tax gave a refund and we don't have to pay anything for 9 months or unless the house is sold.

I did my father in laws probate, he had a house and around £40,000 in money. He was just under inheritance tax. I had everything to hand and rang the probate office who told me exactly what forms I needed to fill in. I recall it costing about £300. Whilst doing the form online I wasn’t sure of a couple of things, but a phone call again to probate office, talked me through it. If there is only money, it’s very straightforward. If you have the Will, take it to the bank where her money is and they will take copy of it, as you have to send off the original Will with the Probate forms and bank won’t accept copies. I’m so glad we didn’t use a Solicitor as doing it myself it took around 8 weeks.
