Help my license has expired

Any insurance experts out there. My son crashed his car a few weeks ago fully comp insurance his fault claim going through. I am a names driver on his policy bit haven't ever driven his car. I have just realised when they've asked for a share code that my license expired in 2020. Apparently it would have been auto extended due to covid but is still out by a year. I honestly had no idea genuinely. I have my own car and insurance I cant believe I have been so stupid. My question is if this will invalidate his claim. He has spent thousands on that car of his own money and I will be gutted if he loses that due to my stupid error.

You weren't driving. Renew your licence now. Strictly speaking it's the photo licence that's has expired.

dementedpixie · 01/08/2022 22:12

Your licence itself hasn't expired but the photo has. If you have a current passport I would start the renewal online for your new photocard as that is faster than doing it by post.

tootiredtospeak · 01/08/2022 22:15

I dont have a current passport am off to the post office in the morning and will sort it but had to give the share code to the insurance which shows its currently expired. I will send a ew code once renewed.

Have the insurance company given a reason why they want a copy of your licence now if you weren't driving?

tootiredtospeak · 01/08/2022 23:09

No it's just part of the standard questions its asked for a share code for the driver and both names drivers which gives all license details.

I work in insurance, it's the process but the code shows your driving record and any convictions, explain that it's expired and you have applied for a new license (show proof such as the post office receipt) and tell them you will supply the code once you have it. Is your son the regular driver and you are only the named driver

You do it all online these days....get a photo tomorrow - ether by taking it yourself or going to a place that gives you a code and uploads it for you.

Then get your application in online. Pay for the expedited service. As soon as you have your passport apply for the driving licence online.

@DuchessofAnkh77

Surely it would be quicker just to do the driving licence by mail?

tootiredtospeak · 02/08/2022 07:37

Mintyt yes that's correct I have never driven the car. I do have my own car and insurance so need it sorting asap and will renew this morning at the post office and pay for expediated service if you can. I was just worried they wouldn't pay out on his claim due to this and maybe class it as false information as he will have had to tick that we all had valid UK licenses when he applied for his insurance. He had no clue and neither did I till I got that code yesterday.

The fact your license has expired is irrelevant for his claim. You weren't driving. The insurance company cannot refuse to pay on that basis.

TheTeenageYears · 02/08/2022 08:36

I would in the meantime check the terms of your own insurance carefully and not drive until you are sure your expired photo card isn't an issue.

The photo card expires, not the licence, so OP is fine to drive. She can be fined for not renewing it though...

Mintyt · 02/08/2022 10:32

@tootiredtospeak I'm sure you will be fine

We don't know how old OP is. Your driving licence does expire on your 70th birthday and has to be renewed every 3 years after that.

Apologies, of course OP if you happen to be over 70 just ignore my posts. I stupidly assumed you were not.

tootiredtospeak · 02/08/2022 15:10

I am 45 so not quite there yet
