Changing my dc’s surname

Hi, wondering if anyone can offer any advice.
I’m married but didn’t change my surname. My DC only has my DH surname. Now with hindsight I wished I’d added mine!
I’m about to renew our passports and would like my surname on DCs passport to make it easier when we travelling without DH.
Does anyone know if this is possible? If I change their name by deed poll can I then change their passport? DH fully onboard so no issues there.
Thanks.

Yes. If you change by deed poll, you can change the name on their passport.

carefullycourageous · 03/05/2022 05:58

Yes but you need legal advice, you can't just do it for a child without a solicitor - I think!

Eckno · 03/05/2022 06:07

Thanks for your replies. Could get pricey then if I have to use a solicitor?!

Few hundred I think we were quoted.

I changed both my DC's surname by deed poll and they now both have passports in their new name.

No need whatsoever for a solicitor? Cost about £30 each I think.

Oh blimey!

Maybe my situation was non standard. It was a while ago also. That's why I said ’I think'... Sorry if I have put bad advice on your thread!!

carefullycourageous · 03/05/2022 06:21

It was this about needing an 'enrolled name change' I think www.gov.uk/change-name-deed-poll/change-a-childs-name

Thanks @carefullycourageous
Looks like I’ll need either a solicitor or officer of the courts to witness it. I may call them and see if the latter is cheaper.

I also changed my child’s name by deed poll. No solicitor needed. Printed out the forms and signed them, sent them off. Done

Eckno · 03/05/2022 06:31

@WhatIsThisPlease Was this recently? Wondering if the rules have changed. Or whether you are able to get it witnessed at the courts.

Thanks for your replies. Those of you who have done it, did you have to fill out these forms?

Affidavit of Best Interest
Completed by parent(s) and sworn before either solicitor, Commissioner of Oaths or a Senior Court officer.

Statutory Declaration for a Minor
Completed by the Declarant and sworn before either solicitor, Commissioner of Oaths or a Senior Court officer.

I changed DC's names a few years ago but don't think the rules have changed?

A friend did it recently for her DD and just used the online service, no solicitor. You just need to fill in the form online and then when the deed poll arrives, get it witnessed and sent back.

KangarooKenny · 03/05/2022 06:39

It must have changed since I did it as we just got friends as witnesses.

It really won't. I think it cost us a fiver to have the forms witnessed by a solicitor, maybe a tenner. The forms are all online, it is very easy. It does take some time to come through so if you wanted to do it all before your summer holidays you vest get a move on.

Coffeeholix · 03/05/2022 07:07

It’s easy, change it online and send the forms off when getting a new passport. I think you only need to get a solicitor involved if one parent doesn’t consent, which is not the case here.
