I wondered if anyone could advise me about this. I bought my son a laptop from a company that sells refurbished laptops for Christmas, it came with a year's warranty. Almost immediately, we had problems with it, the firm said we could send it back for repair but wouldn't consider a refund. It was returned and some of the problems remained plus we found it would not connect to the wifi reliably and now at all. I have sent it back and said I want a refund as it is not fit for purpose (under CR Act, a buyer must allow a company the chance to repair first but if the problems remain, s/he can ask for a refund); they are refusing saying that it works as would be expected for a laptop of its age even though this means waiting 10+ minutes for booting up and finding an old-generation router to connect to the internet.

I want to take the matter to the SCC but the company name is not registered at Companies House and, now I have checked my bank statement, the money went to a company with a different name. So, who should I sue and should I find out if there is a limited parent company?

If anyone is able to offer advice, I'd be very grateful.

If they have a website, their terms and conditions should tell you who your contract is with. That is who you should sue. Whether that company is owned by a parent company is irrelevant.

How did you pay? You'd likely be better going through your credit card company if you paid with one. Some debit cards offer protection through the banks as well.

Thank you both. I didn't know about chargeback, @bluebird3, so I contacted my bank and it said I was 3 days over the limit - I am trying to argue that, according to Which?, chargeback also allows for from date of delivery rather than simply date of purchase so we'll see. If it doesn't work, I will go down the SCC route, thank you for your advice on that @prh47bridge
