Does all estates go to probate ?

Just wondering … do all inherited estates go to probate ? I thought I read somewhere it had to be over a certain amount ? - anyone know ?

It depends if there was a will I think. I'm dealing with an estate where there wasn't a will, have to apply for letters of administration.

Some asset holders will pay out without probate up to a certain amount. If there's a surviving spouse and everything that was joint is going straight to them, possibly not.

If a property is being sold, yes probate will be required.

Whether or not there was a will just means it will be probate (if there was a will) or letters of administration (if not). They are the same thing really, as is the procedure to obtain them.

The government guidance is easy to read.
Plus as PP said, sometimes you have to to get things to pay out. I did for DM’s private pension.
