Landlord wanting to increase rent with no notice

We were informed a few weeks ago that our landlord was moving to a new agency who would be taking over the day to day management of our tenancy.

We’re in the process of moving everything across and they’ve just sprung on us an increase of £25pcm rent today which they’re expecting this month.

I’ve already queried this with them and they said they tried to speak to my partner last week on the phone however he wasn’t able to talk for long due to having covid. Regardless, am I right in thinking we’re meant to be given a minimum months notice?

We haven’t actually seen or signed a new tenancy yet

Any increase in rent needs a month's notice and should be formally requested

Do you have an existing tenancy agreement?

……otherwise these are the rules around rent increases in England

Our concern is that we’re inbetween contracts and if we push back they make life difficult or even worse our landlord evicts us. The location is very convenient and we want to stay for at least another year.

Are you in a fixed term tenancy which is about to expire?
Or are you on a periodic, month by month tenancy?

Pay the £25 increase then. Is it worth kicking off about if it’s possible they could evict you.

I would just pay it. It's quite a small increase.
