Keeping own name for work

What's the best way to deal with keeping your own name for work.

For years I have been using both names, married name with Docs & Mortgage own name with work, pension & HMRC.

The penny has dropped that it could lead to issues in the future.

What is the best way to manage keeping my own name for work?

I just kept my maiden name as my work name bit my married name on all legal documents.

So my email is maiden name, everyone knows me by maiden name. But payroll, company car, hmrc is all in my married name.

Though I am getting divorced so it's all going back to my maiden name. Wish I handr changed it in the first place.

I never changed my family name

Only my DM ever saw any issue with that.

@Associatepeggy
Has that worked for you with HR?

That might be the best way for me to deal with it too

I do need to sort it because if I died the death cert would be married name, I changed my name with the Doc (so my babies would have the same name) but I have work pension and some bank stuff in maiden name.

If you can, keep some id in both names. My sister and I independently have both kept passports in maiden name and drivers licence in married name, which has mostly worked well. My initial idea twenty years ago of passports in different names would not have worked at all, however (we have dual nationality).

I can never understand why people do this. Seems a lot of unnecessary faff. Why not just keep your own name in the first place or, failing that, double barrel? A friend of mine & her husband double barrelled. He still uses just his original surname at work but it's just like using a shortened version of his actual name, not something totally different.

Yeah when I was offered the job I told them my professional name was X but all my legal things were Surname Y.

So my email, my listing in our opines directory is maiden. But payroll, pension etc is in the other.

@maya71 don't know why anyone else does it, but I was quite established in my career and known in my industry as my maiden name. Tbf, taking the married was the mistake.

@maya71
I sleepwalked into this crazy situation without fully thinking stuff through.

Hindsight always wonderful, I should have hyphenated it. Which would have given me the same name as my kids and my own name for work.

I can see its going to be a faff if anything happened to me so want to sort it but not sure the best way to sort it.

I used to work in HR and this was very common. I was glad when we had an info system where we could make a note of the other surname used - the only time it was really an issue was if something like a mortgage reference request came in with the name we didn't know, we'd usually contact the company to check.

If you are concerned about the pension, I would speak to the pension company - it may be possible to provide them now with proof of both names so it's not something to worry about later on.

I don't think it is a problem really, so don't worry.

@maya71 It’s handy if you’re an author and whatnot where your brand is your name.

Cleopatra2022 · 27/02/2022 11:08

I still use my maiden name for all work related things and my married name in my personal life. It’s never been an issue.

Dinoteeth · 27/02/2022 11:14

@Cleopatra2022
What personal stuff do you mean?

I have current account where my wages go in my own name, and my mortgage in my married name - seemed logical at the time and hasn't caused an issue until I tried to move my ISA the two banks won't do it because of the names.

Then I realised it could be a real faff if I died and my death cert was one name and other work pension in another.

Hyphenation is a good option for some, if the names work ok together. Our names are both potential trouble individually anyway, and combined would justify a charge of child cruelty :)
