Damaged goods delivered - supplier won't accept responsibility

A present I'd ordered arrived broken. It was fragile, but just put in a Jiffy bag, no extra wrapping and nothing on the parcel to say it was fragile.
Supplier is saying they can't take responsibility for damage as it's the courier's fault, I say it's theirs because it was poorly packaged and nothing to let the courier know it was fragile.

All they will offer me is a 2/3 refund in the form of a voucher if I buy something off them again. No chance. I want a full refund. It wasn't a huge amount of money to me, but might have been to other people; and out of principle I want them to take responsibility.

Anyone know how I stand legally? It's not a huge amount of money but companies can't treat customers like this and I am prepared to have a lengthy email battle with them.

I would normally ask a lawyer friend for advice in situations like this but for family reasons don't want to bother them at the moment.

Thank you

Even if it is the couriers fault they need to claim compensation from the courier, but they should still be refunding you.

If you ordered it online then you have additional rights to return. See this: www.gov.uk/accepting-returns-and-giving-refunds

So they are saying I have to pay to return it and still aren't agreeing to a refund or a replacement. Hate being treated like this.

The Which website is really useful. This might be the letter/wording you’re after:

Supplier is saying they can't take responsibility for damage as it's the courier's fault

It doesn't matter whether it was the supplier or the courier at fault. The courier was contracted to the supplier. You can't claim damages from the courier. They can.

As the present was damaged on delivery, you are entitled to reject it and receive a full refund.
