Help! Personal Injury Claim

In a pickle and looking for some advice please.
A few weeks ago, a TNT courier injured his finger on my letter box. I was working from home upstairs and all of a sudden heard lots of screaming at my front door - a bizarre amount of screaming to be honest.
Came downstairs and opened the door and his middle finger was bleeding - he was extremely rude and demanded a plaster. Which I gave and also gave him lots of kitchen roll to help with any blood.

He was delivering a birth certificate from passport application, with an A4 envelope that clearly said "Important documents enclosed. DO NOT BEND". The envelope was in a terrible state, completely crumpled and like he had just shoved it through the letter box with his whole hand, hence why he apparently injured himself. Looking at the letter box, I still can't fathom how he managed to cut himself on it - there are no loose wires or sharp bits protruding. However as I was upstairs at the time, I didn't see it happen.

Fast forward to today and I have received a letter from solicitors about a Personal Injury Claim. He has stated that as he posted the letter, he was bitten by my dog and I am in breach of Section 2(2) of the Animals Act.

I don't have a dog, or any pets in fact. And all of my neighbours would be able to confirm this. Can anyone offer any advice please? Other than me needing to get legal advice! I worry he is pulling an insurance job. Unfortunately I don't have a camera installed :(

Do you have any house insurance? Or any policies with legal support (car, house, personal, health, membership of a trade union)?

SilverHairedCat · 09/12/2021 10:13

If you have the envelope, keep it.

needasleep · 09/12/2021 10:17

Hi if you have building or contents insurers send them a copy of the letter and they will handle this matter for you

Nazza32 · 09/12/2021 11:02

@silverHairedCat thank you - I do indeed have the crumpled envelope, thankfully I didn't empty the waste paper bin!

This sounds like he's trying to scam you...

BadgerFace · 09/12/2021 11:35

I would say he’s ruined his own scam by claiming to have been bitten by a dog when you don’t have one! I would simply reply this is untrue because I don’t own a dog and then report the incident to the courier company with the delivery date and details so they are aware he is trying to scam recipients. Hopefully your home insurance legal cover will help give you some comfort but please don’t worry about this. Especially if you have a new baby.

I can’t even work out why/how anyone would put their hand far enough through a letterbox to be bitten by a dog inside the house! Confused

Hope478 · 09/12/2021 12:26

Please also counter claim for the cost of your documents :)

ChristmasPlanning · 09/12/2021 19:41

Hmmmm he sounds very dodgy

Nazza32 · 10/12/2021 11:19

@BadgerFace, @Hope478, @ChristmasPlanning. yes it does seem really dodgy doesn't it, the more I think about it, the more his behaviour seems really bizarre and now he's made the Personal Injury claim, it's all falling into place.
I live in a gated Mews with no houses opposite (I guess likelihood of door cams is higher with a typical two sided street). There's no blood on the envelope or inside the house or letterbox so I really do think he cut himself then started screaming at my door.
It's so gutting that people like this exist!
