Transferring bills to my name

newyearsresolurion · 07/12/2021 15:37

We have some bills accounts in H’s name but I pay the bills as he pays for others . However I want these changed to my name as am the one paying obviously. H seems reluctant to call the companies to change the accounts into my name. I know that for me to do this he has to be present. My question is should I stop paying the call them to open new accounts in my name instead? I would like to improve my credit score as I pay for bills and it’s silly that they are not in my name. Is H doing this purposely to build up his credit? Almost everything regarding the house is in his name. I moved in fair enough ( rented property)

What is his reason for not putting them in your name? What sort of bills are they and what is your housing situation (owned outright/mortgaged/rented)?

He doesn’t give a reason just

Thanks for replying

Virgin media and tv license. He avoids the subject. It’s a rental property

I've recently had to change bills to my name after separating. Virgin is a complete nightmare and still in his name as contract isn't up, my understanding is I have to wait and then arrange a complete new contract.
Water and council tax were really straight forward though.
Haven't got round to tv licence yet.

The only bill that shows on my credit report is the water bill. Everything else is my mobile phone, bank and mortgage so I don't think either of you have anything to gain.

Thanks for replies @ArnoldBee I didn’t know that! Maybe it’s not worth the stress.

If he won't put them in your name why are you the only one paying them? Tv license is simple to change at the renewal point. What are your finances like otherwise? Are you concerned about being left financially vulnerable? Are you on the tenancy?

If we have to buy(planning to) or if I have to rent / buy on my own in the future for credit history it could show that all bills are in his name including tenancy . I have a good credit as I pay for my own things phone, car , credit card but thinking could be better if I included the other things am paying for.

Please don't buy a house with someone you can't talk to.

newyearsresolurion · 08/12/2021 18:41

@reasysteady am undecided

He shouldn't be refusing to put bills you pay into your name or at the very least joint names, where this is allowed. This doesn't sit well with me. If he won't agree, you shouldn't really keep paying them but I understand that this might have negative effects you want to avoid such as if he doesn't pay them either and that leads to problems such as being cut off or not being able to remortgage due to credit problems. It depends what he is like overall.

He can do it in writing as well, maybe it's the actual phoning he doesn't like or can't get round to, and he'd sign a letter that you typed out for him and then posted. (You could write it jointly and both sign it, saying what you both want to happen.)

Make sure you hang on to the proof that you have paid these bills (especially if you move accounts and can't access that information online anymore) and make a note of what you ask him and the dates when he refuses. And keep a record similar things that put you on the back foot financially. You may need this later no matter how stable you relationship currently is.

Good thinking. We have one bill in my name that is purely so I have a certain type of regular paper utility bill for both ID and credit record purposes (even though that bill is actually paid by him out of his account when it comes). (Like you I also have other payments in my name but wanted this one too - and we keep records c.f. my previous post.)

Thanks @Anaximedes
