Parking

Is there any route to stop dangerous parking that I haven't yet tried?

Couple of cars park literally blocking the whole pavement, one behind the other.

Also on a bend so can't see round the corner when coming from either direction.

Due to cars parking legally on the other side of the road it's only wide enough for one vehicle to get past so if you walk into the road to get round the cars on the pavement you face getting hit.

I've tried the Police, district, county and parish council and no one is interested. Literally no response. We're not in London.

What can be done? I drive past it to and from everywhere I need to go. I walk past it twice and day for school run. I've seen so many car near misses. I've been in several near misses despite me creeping round the corner, the other non local drivers just barrel through. There's been a reported pedestrian near miss this week. The owners are aware of their neighbours' inconvenience but as they have no driveway and 2 small children refuse to park further away but safer (male is a regular gym attendee but clearly can't walk 50 yards). So everyone else and their children are put at risk. What can I do? Are there magic words I can say that would trigger some interest? And who is responsible for this safety issue? Really appreciate any practical advice.

Post it in “ you park like a ”😂

Diagram ? But from what you’ve said it’s really awful but no one cares - until there is a tragic accident I guess.

I guess you’ve tried identifying and having an adult to adult no shouting chat with the drivers ?

If so more childish ways of pointing it out could be used - Pritt sticking notes in the sight line of the front windscreen etc. Nothing destructive but hugely annoying

Male is on bail for aggression related crimes so I don't fancy a face to face conversation!

More passive aggressively I've raised the more general issue of pavement parking with no cars identifable and he responded with 'I'm going to keep doing it. Ha ha ha if it bothers you' (I'm paraphrasing but...)

I've given a diagram a go!

Purple is pavement. Grey is road. Blue is legally parked cars in a parking layby. Yellow is dangerously parked cars.

Have you tried writing to your MP? Local newspaper?

Chimley · 31/10/2021 16:51

I haven't! I think I'll leave it a couple of months from my latest attempt and then try another route.

I've had good responses and results from my local MPs over the years, so might be worth a try.
I worked in a public sector organisation at one time and any complaint via an MP went straight to the top of the pile.

Good luck with it, sounds like a real nuisance.

Media and MP are probably the routes to try. Could you try to get some of the near misses on video? That could be quite impactful.

Photo and ring police non emergency they properly send pcso

This is an ongoing thing where I live, people with wheelchairs, prams, have to walk into a busy A road to get past. Been going on for years, nothing ever done

My local councillor is pretty good at getting someone to look at parking on pavements - not that it necessarily gets anything done - but if they're blocking the whole pavement and making it dangerous for pedestrians to use the road, that might trigger it if the right person does some prodding.

I had a similar issue with the end of our road where it meets the main road. Building work at the house opposite the T junction caused builders to park on the grass verge on our side of the junction meaning we had our visibility splay dangerously reduced. The driver of the van in the picture gave me a mouth full when I politely asked him to move, and was unhappy that he was only going to be parked there an hour. Next guy I spoke to was better, more understanding, and parked further back so that it didn't affect our view, but plenty more contractors still parked blocking our view. Eventually I took to contacting the police on twitter and on 101. After 2-3 weeks as I was leaving one time I saw two officers speaking to them about the parking and they have parked much more considerately since then.

I think what swung it with the police was two things:

  1. I explained it as a safety issue.
  2. It's a main road, so patrols pass by every day. No special trip necessary - all it needed was for someone to have a quiet part of their day.
